I don't think that's quite correct. If you actually look at some reported beta values for the stocks above, the range is stark. Wachovia, a banking stock, is negative, CBS and KBH is moderate at 1.3, 1.17 respectively and CIT, is nearly 2.
So CIT makes sense, and KBH is heavily tied to home markets, and CBS is under a lot of pressure recently. The point being that Wachovia, CBS, and KBH are clear examples where historical betas are not a good guide in current conditions. There is significant disagreement in the valuations of all three companies, and CBS in particular was recently grossly undervalued.
This is also probably one way the SEC monitors for insider trading.

"8. Social networks will start translating their members into advertising dollars"
This is craziness. Social Media has yet to be proved the run-a-way success people hope for, and the ad revenue monetization is just not there, at least not the way most people have hoped it would be.
Myspace was bought for 800mm, and then turned around and singed a 4 year 900mm deal with Google, and Google claims they got hosed in the deal.
NOw facebook wants to be seriously valued at over 1billion bucks, much less 15bb? Ridiculous.
The number of internet companies with big names and audience, and not a clue on how to make money is staggering, and they all wish they had a solid business model in place now.
The mantra of "build it and they will come..." has been the cry of hundreds of failed valley startups, and little has changed. Expect some spectacular crashes!
Has eBay Reached the Limit of the Network Effect? [View article]
Although this company has some strong points, and I was at first rather positive about their outlook, I've come to the conclusion that this company and their management lack any credibility at all.
They seem completely unable to make and commit to positive long term initiatives for change, largely because they don't have a good idea of the exact impact of their actions.
This is a very difficult, and sad situation, but the end of ebay seems to have begun in earnest.
Is Amazon’s Kindle Success Sustainable? [View article]
the very thought of reading a book on my iphone make my 20/50 eyes scream in horror.
this is really the beauty of the kindle, etch a sketch like reproduction of text on an electronic screen that does not strain my already over-strained eyes like lcd tablet pc screens do.
I suggest people thoroughly use both products (iPhone, and Kindle) prior to comparing and contrasting their potential for future ebook adoption.
Amazon: Kindle Estimates Keep Going Up [View article]
I think the response to Mahaney's revision could be classified as a bit frothy based solely on 1bn projections, but there is also definite upside potential here.
Total college textbook market is approx 7.5bn. If kindle is truly a platform type technology that changes the way consumers interact with published content, then long term potential is huge. Uses extend past consumer, and non professional education, and if this becomes so, than amazon has a game changer in their back pocket, if not, a solid 5% growth product. In any case, one has to be impressed by the innovation here.
The core marketplace business, and more specifically, ebay.com, may have some issues at the moment, but overall this company makes a ton of cash, paypal has very solid growth, and skype adds more users in a week than vonage ever has.
When people are fearful it's time to get greedy, and market sentiment can change quickly.
