  • The Tanker Industry - Q2 2015 Results Comparison [View article]
For what it's worth, I heard on the news that in a month or two, they're going to try to repeal the block to the US exporting crude oil. As a layman, it seems to me this would add a whole new block of business for tankers. I was wondering if this will affect tankers, and how and how much? Thank you for any answers.

  • AT&T: Questionable Synergy Prospects Don't Change Value [View article]
    >As somebody with DirecTV and a non-AT&T provider for mobile and broadband, I honestly don't see switching to AT&T wireless without them offering an exceptional deal.<

When I first moved to where I live now, we had AT&T. No reception here at all. So we swapped to Verizon for phones. Only internet here was dialup at 26.4 kbs (Sadly, that's still the case, too.) No cable either, so we have DirecTV. Ended up getting Hughesnet for internet, but it's really expensive for 250 MB/day allowance before being throttled.

Recently, there was a new tower built about 1/2 mile from the house. People I know were talking about swapping to AT&T. I got to looking and found out that the tower is AMT and that AT&T is leasing it. So we went last week and changed our phones over to AT&T. I hated buying the phones, but with the discounts they're offering for new customers, they're practically free, and there's no contract. We ordered wireless modem for our network in the house here for the laptops and desktops. Going to drop Hughesnet once we get that working. Oh, I got a tablet for $0.99, too.

So for people like me (yeah, I know there's not a lot!), it is a pretty good deal. We'll end up paying around $10/less per month and have 15 GB for two of us to use. I guess I need to buy some more T so the dividends will help pay the phone bill! :)

I saw a commercial where I can get DirecTV on 4 phones for $200/month. That's ridiculous. I might pay $50/month for DirecTV on phones, but never $200.

As a side note, I had never heard of American Tower (AMT) before, so I learned something.

I can't understand letting someone else pick out your food. I always like to choose because all food is not the same. Some may be over or under ripe, bigger or smaller than I want, etc. This may become a trend, but it won't be for me.

  • Nordic American Tankers Acquires 2 Suezmax Tankers For $122 Million [View article]
If these two ships are average age of 5 years old, that will help the average age of the fleet. Perhaps that was a consideration in purchasing these ships. Plus the additional capacity helps.

I've always heard about "a slow boat to China." Perhaps I'll ride NAT and collect this great dividend for a while!

Hydro is minimal, nuclear is trying to have a comeback (but spent fuel is still an issue, and they can't swing load to meet demand), coal plants are being torn down, and natural gas looks like the future in electrical generation. It takes big pipelines to supply natural gas power stations.

I got into NAT around $10/share, now it's $16.83. Dividend increases this year are 57%, 73% and 5%. Not a bad ride so far. I don't know how long the trip will last, but I'll ride it for a while longer!

  • Will Verizon Take Notice Of What AT&T Is Doing Right? [View article]
Actually, I have the options of AT&T dialup at 26.4 kbs or Hughesnet with 250 MB download (DTV doesn't offer internet) allowance per day. VZ and T wireless barely gets here and runs 150 kbs. No cable, DSL, ISDN. All thanks to free enterprise and less regulation. Sadly, the fastest internet in the world is just an hour away from here.

  • EPA ruling comes too late, as power companies already spent billions [View news story]
Many coal plants still in operation have already added mercury mitigation systems, scrubbers, Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Systems, etc., to comply with the regulations. If those regulations are rescinded, that that money is indeed wasted. Coal plants were paid for years ago and, except for maintenance, operation and fuel costs, make pure profit. That's why they will be around for many years to come.

The US was and still is the Saudi Arabia of coal. It's a shame to be swimming in it and not use it.

All it would take is another Fukushima or TMI to shut down all of nuclear for months or even years and then everybody will be crying because there's not enough electricity because they tore down coal plants.

People seem to be relating GBX and the price of oil. Maybe or not rightly so. I suppose with less drilling, there will be less demand for shipping by rail.

    Perhaps this had an effect:

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries on Friday resolved to keep its production target steady at 30 million barrels a day. While some analysts suggested the cartel might increase output a bit, the unchanged production target met the consensus forecast.
