  • For Sirius, Debt Repayment Is the Way to Go [View article]
No dividend! Company can/should use $$ to pay down debt, repurchase shares, or look into expansion if its possible.

Honestly as a shareholder (like many of you), I would like to see a combination of debt reduction and share buy-back! I could care less about a dividend--I want to see SIRI put that "dividend" $$ to work by increasing its asset position, share buy-back, debt reduction, or merger/acquisitions!!!

Bob, Why not? I mean if you can recommend stocks to your clients, why not own some of them yourself and make some $$$!!! I don't see this as a conflict of interest!

This company, as well as MSFT too, looks like a gold mine when you crunch the #'S! However, there is one component no company has control over--the market! I like the valuation of CSCO, but I think they are hanging on to too much cash! Put that money to work, grow the business through acquisitions and get a higher return on investment! This is what the market and shareholders want most! Honestly, it may be time to look for another CEO!!! With the stock down 3 straight quarters, I have extended my long position the last 2 "dips." I see an opportunity for upward mobility, however its up to CSCO mgmt to make it happen!

If I were a shareholder, I would want them to increase share value and not pay out a dividend! Put some of the cash to work and get a better return on investment! Sitting on $40B in cash is not a smart move!

This is correct also and a good point! Many of these leases have several "clauses" to them that allow for expansion if needed!

  • FedEx vs. UPS: Which Is the Right One to Buy? (Hint: Go With The Higher Dividend) [View article]
    notbob,

Well about 10 years ago, UPS did go on strike and it really crippled their business--and put a huge hurt on small businesses too! There is no way the competition can obsorb this much volume in such a short time-frame! However, UPS recovered quite nicely from this and mgmt has had more favorable agreements since then.

Also, with the pension situation--thats UPS again. This time, the union hosed over the employees on the funding of the pension. My understanding is that the company had to take over the union ran underfunded pension plan.

I would have to agree with this. Long term I would be a UPS investor. Short term--only when markets are down--would I enter a position with FDX.

Frank, I have to ask: Is UPS really "employee owned?" At one time before the company went public, you could say this. Now that they are publicly traded, you really cannot use this term. The reason I say this is because FDX issues shares of stock (or options) to its upper mgmt also!

I've worked for both companies, and I will be honest-from my perspective, I would have to go with UPS over FDX in the long haul. UPS has made great strides to catch up with FDX technology and I like the fact that UPS doesn't utilize 3 different route trucks to deliver packages compared to FDX! Also, advertising and salesforce--UPS has a huge advantage over FDX. I rarely see a FDX commercial!

Its a very tough and competitive industry for both companies! Billions in capital and overhead expenditures! When markets are down (in the past), FDX has taken bigger hits then UPS. When markets rise like they have recently, FDX makes a bigger comeback on a percentage basis. So as an investor, I would definitely watch both of these stocks during bad economic times--that would be an optimal buying opportunity!

Skimming the #'s provided in this article, it looks like FDX has more room to pop then UPS. Who cares about a measly 2.6% annual dividend--you will lose this to inflation anyway. I would rather have stock growth with the potential gains far above a mere 2.6% dividend payout any day! However, I do believe Dennis J. is correct with his statement above, and that is something to consider. Also, FDX is know for buying used planes and converting them fill their needs.
