Total CO2 Equivalence: Once a commercial bagged soil amendment product, every suburban household can do it, The label can tell them of their contribution, a 40# bag = 150# CO2 = 160 bags / year to cover my personal CO2 emissions. ( 20,000 #/yr , 1/2 Average ) www.epa.gov/climatecha...
But that is just the Carbon! I have yet to find a total CO2 equivalent number taking consideration against some average field N2O & CH4 emissions. The New Zealand work shows 10X reductions.If biochar proves to be effective at reducing nutrient run-off from agricultural soils, then there will accordingly be a reduction in downstream N2O emissions.

Most all this work corroborates char soil dynamics we have seen so far . The objective of the biochar research is to quantify the effects of amending soils with CQuest™ Biochar on crop productivity, soil quality, carbon sequestration and water quality. Field trials will involve incorporation of biochar in replicated field plots and on-farm strip trials with monitoring of crop yields, soil quality, water quality, emissions of greenhouse gasses, and soil carbon sequestration. Laboratory studies will involve amending soils with biochar and quantifying changes in soil quality and microbial activity during incubations.
Biochar will be shipped from Dynamotive's West Lorne facility to Agricultural Research Service (ARS) locations in Iowa, South Carolina, Idaho, Washington, and other ARS locations. Initial results are expected during the 2009 growing season.

Changing World Technologies
Ultimately we must leave the combustion age behind. Charcoal to the soil is a bridging first step as other energy conversion technologies bloom from Nano and bio research . Thankfully we can do Terra Preta (TP) soil with off the shelf technology now.
Oil companies must come to see the overwhelming value of their fossil carbon as the best feedstock for the manufacture ( via carbon nanotubes, fullerines, DNA programed nano self assembly, etc.) of virtually all things in the near future.
This convergences of different technologies will end the Combustion age.

U.S. Department of Agriculture to Evaluate CQuest™ Biochar
Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement Signed
The objective of the biochar research is to quantify the effects of amending soils with CQuest™ Biochar on crop productivity, soil quality, carbon sequestration and water quality. Field trials will involve incorporation of biochar in replicated field plots and on-farm strip trials with monitoring of crop yields, soil quality, water quality, emissions of greenhouse gasses, and soil carbon sequestration. Laboratory studies will involve amending soils with biochar and quantifying changes in soil quality and microbial activity during incubations.
Biochar will be shipped from Dynamotive's West Lorne facility to Agricultural Research Service (ARS) locations in Iowa, South Carolina, Idaho, Washington, and other ARS locations. Initial results are expected during the 2009 growing season.

Despite the snub, it looks like the article created enough of a buzz that it made it into Obama's stack of pre-election reading material...

"Petrobank commences THAI/CAPRI Pilot
I share this recent release from Petrobank who is pioneering the THAI protocol for producing the tarsands. They have successfully implemented THAI and are now testing CAPRI which is a catalytic sleeve in the production well. They are also installing a slotted liner system which should eliminate the sand inflow problem.
Remember this pilot system is only two years old. They are now also ramping up the air input in order to maximize production. Remember that in the early going, the burn front would be small preventing full air flow. Now with plenty of oil removed it should be easy to expand air flow. It is projected that each well will achieve production rates of around 1000 barrels per day and sustain this for at least three years if not a great deal longer. No one is that courageous yet.

I cannot over exaggerate how important THAI technology is. Without CAPRI a THAI well is converting 8 degrees API oil to 12 degrees API while also producing some lights. It is doing this without mining the tarsand or putting any fuel into the formation. The environmental footprint is little different that that of a conventional oil well with perhaps a little more CO2 allowed to escape that is surplus to what is dissolved into the formation itself which is beneficial in releasing the oil from the sand.
With CAPRI, it seems possible to bring the gravity up to perhaps 17 degrees API and that will make it directly shippable into the pipelines, or so close as to be easily upgraded."

Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement Signed
The objective of the biochar research is to quantify the effects of amending soils with CQuest™ Biochar on crop productivity, soil quality, carbon sequestration and water quality. Field trials will involve incorporation of biochar in replicated field plots and on-farm strip trials with monitoring of crop yields, soil quality, water quality, emissions of greenhouse gasses, and soil carbon sequestration. Laboratory studies will involve amending soils with biochar and quantifying changes in soil quality and microbial activity during incubations.
Biochar will be shipped from Dynamotive's West Lorne facility to Agricultural Research Service (ARS) locations in Iowa, South Carolina, Idaho, Washington, and other ARS locations. Initial results are expected during the 2009 growing season.

Michael Pollan is well briefed and excited about Biochar technology, but did not include it in his "Farmer & Chief" article to President Obama, (Which he did read & cited in a speech) but I'm sure Biochar will be his 8001th word to him.

Ultimately we must leave the combustion age behind. Charcoal to the soil is a bridging first step as other energy conversion technologies bloom from Nano and bio research . Thankfully we can do Terra Preta (TP) soil with off the shelf technology now.

I have yet to find a total CO2 equivalent number taking consideration against some average field N2O & CH4 emissions. The New Zealand work shows 10X reductions. As biochar proves to be effective at reducing nutrient run-off from agricultural soils, then there will accordingly be a reduction in downstream N2O emissions.

Most all this work corroborates char soil dynamics we have seen so far . The soil GHG emissions work showing increased CO2 , also speculates that this CO2 has to get through the hungry plants above before becoming a GHG.

I was just reading an article in the New York Times by Michael Pollen about food and the fact that our entire agricultural system is built on cheap oil. As a consequence, our agriculture sector actually is contributing more greenhouse gases than our transportation sector. And in the mean time, it's creating monocultures that are vulnerable to national security threats, are now vulnerable to sky-high food prices or crashes in food prices, huge swings in commodity prices, and are partly responsible for the explosion in our healthcare costs because they're contributing to type 2 diabetes, stroke and heart disease, obesity, all the things that are driving our huge explosion in healthcare costs. That's just one sector of the economy. You think about the same thing is true on transportation. The same thing is true on how we construct our buildings. The same is true across the board."
This article prompted me to send M. Pollan another update on biochar research and genteel pleading to include Biochar technology in his next agriculture policy directive to the president;

The path your work has taken me on in human / plant interactions, the pleasurable and problematic seem solved by diversity and land management practices. We know that means food web/SOM management. The arguments for sustainability you put forward, if embraced, will lead to the biochar bread.
President Obama has already done so much to de-mystified, de-politicize and de-stigmatize the word black, I feel that "A Black Revolution in Agriculture" (as a recent article titled a biochar story), would be quite consistent with this achievement.
Last year there were no biochar studies at the American Chemical Society conference, this year several dozen.

"Petrobank commences THAI/CAPRI Pilot
I share this recent release from Petrobank who is pioneering the THAI protocol for producing the tarsands. They have successfully implemented THAI and are now testing CAPRI which is a catalytic sleeve in the production well. They are also installing a slotted liner system
which should eliminate the sand inflow problem.
Remember this pilot system is only two years old. They are now also ramping up the air input in order to maximize production. Remember that in the early going, the burn front would be small preventing full air flow.
Now with plenty of oil removed it should be easy to expand air flow. It is projected that each well will achieve production rates of around 1000 barrels per day and sustain this for at least three years if not a great deal longer. No one is that courageous yet.

I cannot over exaggerate how important THAI technology
is. Without CAPRI a THAI well is converting 8 degrees API oil to 12 degrees API while also producing some lights. It is doing this without mining the tarsand or putting any fuel into the formation. The environmental footprint is little different that that of a conventional oil well with perhaps a little more CO2 allowed to escape that is surplus to what is dissolved into the formation itself which is beneficial in releasing the oil from the sand.
With CAPRI, it seems possible to bring the gravity up to perhaps 17 degrees API and that will make it directly shippable into the pipelines, or so close as to be easily upgraded."

Pyrolysis of Biomass & Charcoal to the soil is a bridging first step as other energy conversion technologies bloom from Nano and bio research. Thankfully we can do Terra Preta soils (TP) now.
TP starts as a soil nano technology with increased CEC, than a micro tech with soil food web wee-beasties & fungus, and macro with bugs and worms, all with off the shelf technology.

I love the "MEGO" factor theme Mann built the story around. Lord... how I KNOW that reaction.
I like his characterization concerning the pot shards found in Terra Preta soils;

If pre-Columbian Kayopo Indians could produce these soils up to 6 feet deep over 15% of the Amazon basin using "Slash & CHAR" verses "Slash & Burn", it seems that our energy and agricultural industries could also product them at scale.
Harnessing the work of this vast number of microbes and fungi changes the whole equation of energy return over energy input (EROEI) for food and Bio fuels. I see this as the only sustainable agricultural strategy if we no longer have cheap fossil fuels for fertilizer.

There are 24 billion tons of carbon Biomass controlled by man in his agriculture and waste stream, all that farm & cellulose waste which is now dumped to rot or combusted and ultimately returned to the atmosphere as GHG should be returned to the Soil via Biochar.
