  • Dominion Resources Is Boosting Returns To Shareholders, But Is It A Buy? [View article]
According to yahoo finance, on January 21st D closed at 79.27. On February 13th it closed at 72.91. That's is a reduction of just over 8%. From the reading I've been doing, it seems as though folks believe as interest rates eventually increase, the utilities will come down in price. I can't time anything in the markets...I'm terrible at it. I jumped in at 72.45...and if it comes down more in the foreseeable future, fantastic.....I'll buy more. Until then....bring on the divis.

    My timeline = 20+ years

  • Linn Energy: Can The Rally Continue? [View article]
How is it that the Saudis are going to relent on prices? I thought their mantra during the oil sector downturn is that they aren't going to reduce production to help increase the price of oil because they don't want to lose market share.

  • Retirement Strategy: I Will Not Follow The Herd, Will You? [View article]
    Be Here Now -

Totally agree. Picked up some energy stocks (CVX, COP & XOM) early last week. Will they go down more...probably. Can I time the market perfectly...nope. I don't care though...because of item #1. :)

  • Retirement Strategy: I Will Not Follow The Herd, Will You? [View article]
I'm in the "accumulation phase"...I'm not retired yet. That said, I often find it hard to keep my eye on the prize...growing income. With extra volatility, I often have to remind myself of a couple things (the list is actually much longer):
1.) With a long enough timeline, short term volatility doesn't matter.
2.) Losses on paper are only on paper....until you sell.
3.) If dividends get cut, I sell and look to redeploy the $$$ elsewhere...because I'm in it for the monthly/quarterly income and dividend increases.

Keeping my eye on the income prize is difficult and I think requires discipline and constant research and reading. Thank you for provided what I think is a good list of reminders...I need them from time to time.

  • Update: BP Earnings Show That The Sky Isn't Falling [View article]
Rosneft uncertainty, unknown amounts of gulf oil spill claims and the price of oil coming down......these things won't last forever. With an investment timeline of about 10 years, I'm looking forward to all the dividends coming my way.

  • Seadrill Is A Best-In-Class Pick With A Sustainable Dividend Through 2016 [View article]
This is the first article I've read on SDRL that clearly lays out the notion of delivery of new rigs extending into 2016...when debt maturity is modest/manageable; adding credibility to future dividend stability. Add to that timeline Tankerat's expectation of debt reduction / price appreciation and this is why I'm a fan of SA...articles/comments that are helpful when thinking about investment possibilities. Thanks!

  • Kinder Morgan scrapping MLP structure in $44B deal [View news story]
Many criticisms on SA about the structure of the Kinder Morgan companies. A lot of those folks felt like it was the structure of the KM family that was holding back the valuation and potential growth of each stock. Hopefully this will eventually put those concerns to bed and grow KMI in value as well as help to continually amp up the dividends. I wish I had gotten more KMI stock before today...but I suppose I'll just smile and buy more anyway for the future increased dividend income.

  • Kinder Family Tax Planning [View article]
Thanks very much for the article...I learned something today. I wasn't aware of the deferred tax nature of KMR's stock dividend and the subsequent avoidance of the K-1. Now I'll have to take a closer look at KMR.....

  • BP reiterates long-term Russian strategy after sanctions news [View news story]
If I had dry powder, I'd be buying. Once BP gets past the legal concerns from the Gulf spill and the impacts/concerns regarding sanctions are somehow addressed, it'll be nice when checking portfolio balances....until then, I'll enjoy the dividend.

    Long BP.

  • It's still not time to buy offshore drillers, Raymond James says [View news story]
Multi-year down cycle....if true, seems like an opportunity to do a series of buys over time. Who wants to buy when stocks are at all time highs?

  • Court revives BP retirement plan lawsuit filed after oil spill [View news story]
The longer the negative press and lawsuits continue...the longer it will take the stock price to achieve full value....which gives me more time to increase my position and consume a juicy dividend along the way. :)

  • College Or Retirement: What To Save For First? [View article]
I would imagine that after the dot com bust in the late 90s and the subsequent financial meltdown in 2007, for many families there remains a deep seeded distrust of the stock market. Where do 529 plans put funds...into the stock market. There's no guarantee that the market won't have a significant pull back when the kid(s) are ready to head to college....and then the 529 balance takes a hit when you need it most. On top of that, what happens if your kid(s) are lucky enough to get a scholarship? It used to be that money in a 529 plan was only available to spend on educational expenses...so there isn't a way to get at the money if your kids get lucky and score a scholarship. Has that changed? Its been awhile since I've spent any time reading about 529 plans.
