  • Apple's Loser Strategy [View article]
I stopped reading after the statement that Lexus and BMW are superior in every respect to Cadillac and Lincoln. That is just not true. It really depends upon the model. You need to dig under the hood a little more before these analogies.

  • Senate Slams Apple On Tax Avoidance [View article]
Maybe Apple should move its headquarters to another country. Then, the Senate could pound someone like Google for being unAmerican and Apple could be considered a great ally for paying so much taxes to the U.S. despite not being an American company.
I hope this post doesn't get me audited by the IRS!

It looks like Snapchat is valued higher than all of Yahoo's core operations put together.

  • Apple (AAPL) releases Tim Cook's official statement (.pdf) to the Senate ahead of his Tuesday appearance at a hearing on corporate tax payments. Among other things, Apple claims it paid ~$6B in federal taxes in FY12 and a 30.5% effective federal tax rate, and that its foreign units don't engage in the practices the hearing focuses on (the shifting of IP to offshore havens, revolving loans from subsidiaries, etc). The company proposes a tax system that's "revenue neutral, eliminates all tax expenditures, lowers tax rates and implements a reasonable tax on foreign earnings." (previous[View news story]
Do you want even more corporations to leave the U.S.? If they move to a more business friendly country, taxes in places like China won't hit them so hard.

  • Boy, Were We Wrong About Yahoo [View article]
I think your stock price curve should have two peaks. Your first peak may be ok although I think it's a little low, but there should be a second peak showing what happens if BABA buys Yahoo. I don't think this is a normal curve like what you show.

  • Report: Apple holding music service talks, mulling Android iTunes app [View news story]
iTunes became super successful in the first place because it supported non-Apple products (i.e. Windows). I think they could do the same with their streaming app without hurting their iPhone sales. I'm not sure about iTunes although the two do go together somewhat.

  • Why Apple Didn't Fix Its Biggest Problem [View article]
Apple certainly needs new products and new market segments to climb higher, but this is true with most high tech companies.

  • More scrutiny for Apple (AAPL): After receiving complaints related to possible anti-competitive sales practices, the European Commission has launched an informal, preliminary inquiry into whether the company compels operators to accept terms which ensure it always gets at least as good a deal in terms of subsidies as competitors. A nine-page questionnaire sent to telecoms also asks about minimum purchase requirements and sales terms, FT reports. AAPL says it is in full compliance with all applicable laws. [View news story]
The term "Most Favored Nations" term wasn't invented by the wireless industry and it's a perfectly legal concept. I don't get the issue. It sounds like the Europeans are just trying to blame their problems on a big company.

  • Let's Put Michael Kors' 'Disappointing' Quarter In Perspective [View article]
I think another part of the issue is that KORS was held by many momentum investors and growth investors who care about technicals and the technicals don't look so hot. However, I think value investors are stepping in and within the next 2-4 months the chart will look a lot better. I'd be surprised if the stock doesn't hit $100 within the next year.

  • InvenSense: Why I Jumped In After Earnings [View article]
A couple thoughts in which I'd be interested in hearing from others whether they have the same expectations. First, I think that the new CFO is playing a role in all of this. It sounds like that inventory might have been worth less than what was on the books and perhaps the previous CFO kept it there just to make the numbers look better. The new CFO is cleaning house, but clearly doesn't want to give us the specifics because it makes the company and the CEO look bad. Thus, if he says that he's now taken care of the problem, it's probably correct.

Secondly, with a new product being sold to Apple, the company should expect lower initial yields and lower margins. That is made up for by increasing the margins a little over time with Apple and by decreasing costs so their margins will be higher to other customers. Again, I think the previous CFO missed this and didn't set expectations properly.

The bottom line is that I think this is a good long term stock, but clearly they needed a new CFO. The vision was there and hopefully now the financials will be better.

  • Forget Alibaba, Let's Talk About Yahoo [View article]
Since Marissa has been CEO for over 2 years now, it would be nice to see a breakdown of the money spent and the return on those investments before giving her a whole lot more money. I realize that much of the money spent was just small "add-ons" where the ROI won't be able to be shown, but the major investments should be able to be determined. The ROI might be in earnings or in estimated worth if necessary.
