Great article this month in Automobile magazine about the 1985 CRX HF which got 50mpg without an electric motor. That's better than any hybrid you can buy today.

Conclusion : nobody cares enough about the cost of fuel. The next generation may care. We have looked this thing in the eye and blinked.
