  • Boeing sued over Asiana 777 crash [View news story]
These people should be grateful to Boeing that they are still alive.

The overwhelming responsibility rests with the pilots and the airline that hired and trained them.

  • Boeing 787 in Japan probed on smoke seen during repairs [View news story]
Boeing lost order race this year to Airbus. It seems Airbus will also surpass Boeing in delivery in not too distant future, even after taking into account Boeing's forthcoming 737 production-rate hike and increase in 787 production.

The IAM should calm down, and be realistic about their compensation. So should SPEEA.

  • Boeing And Airbus: The Battle For Leadership In The Aerospace Industry [View article]
Each company delivers about 600 planes this year.

Boeing's backlog is about 5000 planes, which will take near a decade to deliver.

Airbus can do what it has done largely because it's a states-sponsored enterprise. The government subsidies amount to an order of magnitude more than its competitor.

  • There's a pattern here: China's "State Administration for Industry and Commerce" has mentioned Apple (AAPL -2.1%) in a notice urging authorities to protect consumer rights. The notice comes shortly after a front-page column in a state-owned newspaper and an "investigative special" from a state-owned TV channel took shots at Apple[View news story]
    What are you implying?

The Chinese government is out to get Apple?

  • If and when regulators allow the Boeing (BA) 787 resume commercial operations, they could force the jet to temporarily fly on routes that are always within two hours of the nearest appropriate landing strip. That's down from three hours prior to the jet's grounding and well below the 5 1/2 hours that Boeing is targeting. The move would undermine some of the Dreamliner's top selling points. [View news story]

  • J.C. Penney's (JCP -1.1%) new "mark-up to mark-down" tactic may be straight from Retail 101 but it's a tough row to hoe for a company suffering +20% drops in sales, according to analysts. Is JCP making the transition smoothly? Eyes in the street note that items in stores are "awkwardly" displaying stickers over the older prices in an effort to cover them up. [View news story]
