I wish more people knew how the dollar was propped up by not just Asia but also the Saudis.
As for energy independence, domestic oil supply doesn't mean anything. All oil is sold on world markets. As it stands, we only import about 25% of our oil from the Middle East but we protect our industry in the region.
Energy independence means "cheaper" energy from renewable sources like wind, solar, geothermal, and hydroelectric. It means cars that don't run on oil. These things are cheaper because they don't come with the same externalities surrounding oil and natural gas exploration and demand. As well, they are produced domestically they're not sold on a world market. The US could then sell the technology to the rest of the world the way we've done for decades with oil, computing, and a host of other industries. The US pioneered electricity and we need to keep innovating. Innovation made this country what it is and eight years of resting on our laurels and supporting entrenched, non-innovating business is sinking us.
