  • Identifying The Lowest Risk Preferred Stocks [View article]
Doug, I just read your December article. I am definitely in the group that puts convenience (funds instead of rifle shots) way up there with dividend yields. That said, are preferred CEFs safer than preferred ETFs or do both share the same flaws, e.g., too heavy on financials?

AMLP's attraction is that they are IRA account friendly....no Form K-1 is issued. Another fund that is similar to AMLP but with a higher yield is SRV.

  • Are These High-Yield Funds Right For You? [View article]
For a good selection of BUY/WRITEs, check out Eaton Vance and Nuveen"s funds. Two that I own and like are: ETG and JLA. There are several others and don't forget you can get exposure most of them by simply buying the PCEF.

Doug, let's get specific. I am a retiree that rely on dividend income. Two preferreds that I own seem to be doing well however, I am always looking for a confirmation of my choices. They are: FFC and PSF. Please give me your opinion.

  • Anadarko Petroleum Will Follow Oil Price [View article]
No doubt oil's price in a very large factor. However, I like to look at the exploration stance of management instead of exploitment of older properties. In this regard, I think that Anadarko is the horse to ride, not Apache. Conoco does both, so don't ignore them. They are also a good bet.

  • The Utica Shale Play [View article]
This is a good overview of the whole area. Certainly BP, CHK, et al deserved a mention due to sheer size. You even mentioned Rexx, though they are mostly in the gas area. I am interested in the smaller drillers that stand to benefit much more in the oily eastern Ohio area. Example: Gulfport Energy Corp. (GPOR). They hold acreage in Columbiana County and all the way down to Monroe County. If oil is found, they will be in the heart of it.

You mentioned going short QQQ. Does that also include QQQX ? I own QQQX only for the dividend, not for price stability.

Thanks. I almost sold SDRL but didn't, believing that their growth would cover the divy. I was lucky then and will surely be careful in the future and not follow all of SA's advice.

Your summary is right on. However, for a retiree like me, I need a bit more dividend yield.
