  • More on the iPad Mini: The cheapest model (16GB Wi-Fi) goes for $329. Amazon and Google, sellers of the $199 Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7, are probably breathing sighs of relief. As expected, there's no retina display inside the Mini, but there is an HD front camera and 5MP back camera, and 3G/4G models are offered (they start at $459). Like the iPad 2, the Mini is powered by an A5 processor. Apple (AAPL -2.2%) is selling off. (live blog). [View news story]

  • A "quality-control crackdown" at Foxconn related to iPhone 5 (AAPL) scratches is making shortages worse, a source tells Bloomberg. The report meshes well with earlier reports of labor disturbances caused by workers unhappy with Foxconn's quality-control rules. Interviewed workers claim each step in the iPhone 5 production process brings with it the potential for scratches to its aluminum back. The iPhone 4 and 4S use glass casing rather than aluminum. [View news story]

  • Nokia (NOK) doesn't pass up the chance to gloat over the harsh response (I, II) to Apple's (AAPL) iOS 6 Maps app. "Unlike our competitors ... we completely own, build and distribute mapping content, platform and apps," the company proclaims. A Google Maps (GOOG) exec also takes aim at Apple, declaring "it takes a long time and effort to figure out how to do this right." BI notes Google has 1,100 full-time employees and 6K contractors working on Maps. (Nokia Maps deals: I, II[View news story]

  • "We’ve been completely blown away by the customer response" to the iPhone 5, says an Apple (AAPL +1.2%) spokeswoman. The strong early demand has already been enough for two of Apple's biggest sell-side fans to sing its praises again. Topeka's Brian White now thinks his projections for 10M-12M FQ4 iPhone 5 sales could be conservative. Piper's Gene Munster predicts the phone's feel and build will take consumers by surprise, and notes its social media buzz has been very strong. [View news story]

  • Some of the iPhone 5's (AAPL) finer details are getting criticized. Among the issues: 1) The iPhone 5 won't support simultaneous voice and data on Verizon and Sprint's 4G LTE networks, unlike many other LTE phones. 2) A $29 adapter meant to link the iPhone 5's new dock connector with older accessories won't work with some speakers. 3) Until they're rewritten, existing iPhone apps will display black borders on the iPhone 5, due to its larger display and new aspect ratio. [View news story]
