The Truth About Fossil Fuels and Renewable Energy [View article]
Mr. Shaefer, you rightly pointed out that hydroelectric power generation is not more prevalent due to its associated environmental problems. The same must be said for solar power. First of all, not all areas of the US are blessed with a high percentage of sunny days. Even some of those that are do not have the large expanses of open and relatively flat space needed to accommodate an economically viable solar array. This leaves the deserts of America to host the arrays. I have seen the figures of 100 X 100 miles that would be required. Just wait until the Sierra Club types discover how many fragile species of plant and animal life could be seriously threatened, endangered, and destroyed. If you think a medium size dam represents an environmental problem, just look closely at a large solar array. This just isn't going to work out. For my money, those who currently advocate for solar energy should just take their plans and "stick 'em where the sun don't shine".
