  • Obama lashes out at health insurers in his weekly radio address, calling their efforts 'deceptive and dishonest.' "For decades, whenever we have tried to reform the system, the insurance companies have done everything in their considerable power to stop us," he said.  [View news story]
It amazes me to see all the pro-insurance/status quo comments on this board... what amazes me even more are the almost instant, multiple thumbs-down posters receive if they have a dissenting opinion. Which HMO do you guys work for?

I don't trust Obama, nor did I trust Bush or any other politician, but that doesn't matter. I loathe the health insurance industry and like Michael Clark said, we need to reset this farce... the world looks at the US and laughs.

I truly cannot believe what I’m reading in the vast majority of these posts. HEALTHCARE IS A RIGHT! Anyone who says otherwise is drinking the Kool-aid that the private insurers are pouring. How can a society such as ours allow hospitals to turn away someone in need, just because they can’t afford to pay the bill?!

The vast majority of readers on this website are pro-business, but c’mon people... a society should be judged by how it treats its most needy. It’s not a question of socialism, capitalism or any “ism,” it’s about compassion and doing what’s right for the greater good.

As a dual Canadian/American citizen, I have experienced both countries’ healthcare firsthand. I’ve served in both militaries (USMC & the Canadian Grenadier Guards) and from my personal experience the Canadian system is by far superior.

Earlier this year I was in Vancouver and thought I was having a heart attack. I was rushed to the emergency room and within minutes of arriving was hooked up to an ECG and was attended to by multiple doctors. Turned out to be a false alarm, but guess how much I had to pay for all the attention... NOTHING! No company had to authorize my visit, no one asked me to pay anything, no one sent me a bill later one and I had first class service.

Those who scream the loudest have the most to lose. I pay less for my Canadian Insurance in taxes than my US co-workers do and I never need to worry about being rejected or turned away.

I can go to any walk-in clinic or hospital across the country and say “I’m sick, treat me” and I will get treated. If I have a simple cold or some non-life threatening ailment then I will have to wait a bit, but I know that I will not be forgotten and I know that there are people ahead of me who are sicker so they get seen first; I’m good with that.

The time has come for society to stand-up to these insurance behemoths and punch them in the face! No more fucking around, I have put my money where my mouth is because this is going to happen (I massively shorted some of the biggest healthcare providers)... hasta la vista suckers!

  • The Gold / Silver Ratio: From 1300 to 1900... And Now [View article]
Actually, yesterday a one ounce Canadian Maple Leaf (.9999) paid for one Stella, one Heineken, one Molson Canadian and a tip for my waitress at the pub near my house.

I wanted to see if they would let me use it for the bill and the pub owner snatched it from my hand without giving it a second thought.
I will continue to buy the 9999's and you can continue to mock them... if you like, this time next year we can compare how much I will be able to purchase with that same one ounce coin versus you with $20.

I'll bet you 10 of them (the coins, not your paper) that I'm the winner!

  • IMAX: Welcome Back to the Land of the Viable [View article]
My wife and two sons have been trying to see that Transformers movie in IMAX since Thursday and every showing except last night's midnight showing has been sold out!

We arrived at the cinema yesterday TWO hours in advance of the 8:40 start, thinking we'd get our tickets and go for dinner; not a chance! Sold out! I mentioned to my oldest son that it was also playing in the regular format, to which his reply was "no way dad, that sucks!"

I just laughed and agreed to try again today... after all, my oldest was the one who told me at the beginning of the year that he wanted to see all of the big releases (Watchman, Star Trek, Night at the Museum, Transformers, Harry Potter and Avatar) in IMAX this year; which in turn made me look at their once PoS stock again. I should have bought more back then, but with the profits I made so far, my son can see any IMAX flick his heart desires and the old-man will gladly foot the bill!

Funny thing though... Harry Potter (his second favorite movie behind Transformers) is not being released in IMAX at the same time as it is in the regular theatres, it's two weeks later. Amazingly enough, both of my kids want to see it in IMAX and said they'd wait. I don't know if that will be a common thing or if perhaps (and I suspect this will be the case) they'll see it twice.

I think I'll hold some of my shares until one of the big studios decides that IMAX is ripe to be plucked.

Lol... they're all coming up here (BC)!

5 properties near my land were just bought by Californians (2 more from Oregon last week too) and they payed more than the asking price.

British Columbia, the "other" California! lol
Oh yeah... we pay more taxes here, but at least I can go to sleep at night without triple deadbolting my door and keeping a loaded 44 near the bed. Canadians are like un-armed Americans with healthcare.

Don't get me wrong, I like money as much as the next guy (love gold even more) but it's attitudes like this that are going to widen the gap between rational and irrational Americans. A society should be judged by how it treats it's poorest and neediest.

The rich kids at the playground have all the toys and are loathe to share any of them with the rest of the class. The small group of wealthy brats have been kicking sand in the faces of their classmates for a long time and I will not be at all surprised when someone in the class decides they've had enough. When the bullets start flying, I'll be glad I live in Canada.

Good luck Cali... It's been fun.

  • Geithner to Put Chrysler in Bankruptcy Next Week [View article]
    303,

Your tirade for the rights of these unionised workers is unwarrented and unwanted. Most of the people who post on this site don't think the governments bailouts are the right choice, and I certainly don't want my tax dollars going to any failed business, be it a bank or a car company.

I don't get bailed out if my employer makes bad decisions that lead to its demise (and over the course of my life, that's happened twice now) so why should anyone else?

Perhaps that's a bit selfish, however, it tought me a lesson; which is that I am responsable for the decisions I make and the career path I choose. C'est la vie... you can either bemoan the bad things that happen to you or you can pick yourself up and move on... and most importantly, learn a lesson from what went wrong and try not to make the same mistakes twice.

I feel for those autoworkers who may lose their jobs, but I do not want my tax dollars to prop them up... it becomes a very slippery slope towards creating a socialist state; one that I fear we are well on the way to becoming.

  • Countdown of Manipulated Gold Price Running Out  [View article]
Pluto... CEF.A (or their USD traded symbol CEF.U) is a good one as it's based in Canada and has over 90% of it's holdings in physical bullion.
Uncle Sam can't touch it when the time comes for all American citizens to do their patriotic duty (lmao) by turning in their gold (google: Gold reserve act).

There's also GTU (Central Gold Trust) and it too is located in Canada and according to their mandate:

"The Deed of Trust of GoldTrust specifies that at least 90% of the assets of GoldTrust are to be invested in pure, refined gold bullion. However the policy of the Board of Trustees of GoldTrust specifies that at least 95% of the assets of GoldTrust shall be invested in gold at this time."

As an American living abroad, I have no intention of letting the manipulators get their hands on my gold when their house of cards comes crashing down.
