  • GE Says Smart Grid Equal to 41GW of Power Plants [View article]
tragically 60% of GE functions as a large bank - it takes a lot of financing to afford many of their large-scale products and services - and they won't turn around until banks do. :(

  • Prepare to Sell Monday - Cramer's Mad Money (9/19/08) [View article]
i personally enjoy the show simply because being a new investor, his manic leaps from stock to stock introduces me to more and more of the markets, sectors, and major competitiors of the names i already know.

  • Nine Months Later: Some Annual Predictions from the Financial Press [View article]
yep - i'm getting spanked - having only invested @ august 1, i've still managed to catch up w/ the rest of the market's hideous downturn by being overly optimistic (and overweight) concerning financials.

  • What's Merrill Lynch Worth? [View article]
MER is #1 in the world in the financial advisor business, which will only grow as babyboomers need someone to handle their retirement.

it's not a trading house like LEH, BCS, etc, and they've set the standard for CDO writedowns @ .22 on the dollar. Not to mention John Thain, the new CEO, is a goldman man and wouldn't have jumped onto the titanic.

  • Corning Retains Strong Balance Sheet & Market Position Despite Earnings Warning [View article]

  • Attention Locusts: The Party Is Moving to Merrill and AIG [View article]
Merrill is in a very different boat from BSC, WaMu, LEH, etc. Unlike those other trading houses, Merrill actually has an extremely well established wealth management core to their business - they are the world leaders in wealth management, hands down, and the business is growing rapidly as more babyboomers retire and need their money managed.

the naked short selling is the culprit for the 30% dive this week - i'm waiting for LEH to be decided before i add more to my position, but i am taking advantage of these prices in the teens - and an 8% yield!

management (John Thain) is a Goldman grad, and the future is bright for Merrill.

  • I.O.U.S.A. Movie Is Well-Done and Informative [View article]
that'd do a lot of good - although at the moment social security & medicare compose ~2/3 of the national budget to begin with - reducing defense expenditures won't make everything rosy.

  • Is There a Margin of Safety in Financials? [View article]
merrill lynch is ahead of the write-down curve for the industry. they have maybe 1 more write-down in the future, and then Thain and company will have the firm finally headed in the write direction. Regardless, @ $22-$26, there isn't a whole lot more downside to the price, and w/ Thain's management the future is bright.

  • Microsoft Gets the Blogging Community [View article]
i'll take a Billion cap corporation going into a contract for networking the entire firm w/ microsoft rather than sold-out malls with kids buying the latest gadgets.

then again, i'd take either, too.

    disclosure: thoroughly satisfied vista/microsoft customer.

  • Priceline and Visa: Two Stocks To Buy Now [View article]
your arguements for Visa better apply to Mastercard (if there was any validity to a recent article comparing the 2 competitors). MA has a much smaller US market share than Visa (it's like 75%/25% in V's favor if i remember correctly).

HOWEVER MA already has a HUGE headstart on the international scene, and would appear to be a much better way of taking advantage of foreign growth.

  • Is Poor Stock Market Performance a Positive Long-Term Indicator?  [View article]
i'm quite optimistic for the future. having waited until the start of august to invest 70% of my life savings, i think there's terrific potential for a 19 year old about to start his sophomore year in college.

  • Research In Motion's 3G Counteroffensive: The Smartphone Arms Race Escalates [View article]
that was not particularly coherent - i was in a hurry typing cuz my sisters' needed a carpool run.

to elaborate slightly, I referred to cisco & financials because that partnership is very similar to RIMM and other major business contracts. how the financial sector performs is often a bellweather for CSCO's future, because the largest banks provide cisco with ENORMOUS contracts in order to wire & network all of the offices.

i had recently had cisco pitched to me because they had a new toy in the works, WiMAX, which provides wireless, instead of for a room or house, for a 5 mile radius, college campus, urban zone, etc. HUGE potential, right? WRONG. the toy is nifty, but even if 3000 college campuses install it, that's still GENEROUSLY only a B or 2B. meanwhile the biggest firms on wall st. give cisco 10 times that to keep their systems state of the art.

RIMM and AAPL are the same. just because malls are selling out of the iphone, doesn't mean RIMM's kicking the bucket. every office building in every major city is packed to the gills w/ RIMM devices, and just because a bunch of teens & 20s are buying iphones, that doesn't outweigh the vast majority of the work force in America & beyond.
