Three Technology Barriers to Cloud Computing

Email security is the largest user of cloud applications such as Postini (now Google Message Security), Message Labs (now Symantec), ProofPoint, FrontBridge (now Microsoft), and hundreds more firms.

The sum total of paid users on these business-only networks is more than 50M users.

Users of these email cloud services benefit in many ways and 99% of them renew agreements every year.

Google still cannot get 50M paid users for Google Apps or Gmail.

Why I'm Still Rooting for Amazon, Netflix and Google

For all of the author's speculation about GoogleApps-Docs-Mail-etc use in the future, the fact remains that Google cannot market those products very well at all.

Why can't Google move people from the FREE version of GoogleApps into the PAID version of GoogleApps?

Literally, less than 1% of FREE GoogleApps users will pay for the $50 per user per year version.

GoogleApps-Docs-etc will never replace MSFT in the work place unless and until Google can find a way for people to PAY REAL MONEY for those applications.

WHY? Because businesses don't use FREE services for mission critical business applications because there is NO SUPPORT for FREE applications.

Cloud Computing: Could Customer Service Be Its Waterloo?

Can anyone find a customer service phone number on the Google web site? I certainly cannot.

This alone will prevent millions of small businesses and enterprise companies to never purchase Google Apps other than Postini (where you can find a customer service/technical support phone number on the Postini site).

Google can learn a lot from Postini if they listen!

Is there a "perfect" SaaS solution that will never crash, periodically? Probably not. Is there a non Macintosh computer system that will never make you reboot and sometimes rebuild a hard drive. Probably not.

Google's Postini SaaS email security solution is EXCELLENT in terms of it's proven track record of uptime, reliability, and being secure.

In the 5 years of my firm using Postini, we have never had an email service interruption from Postini.

Email is the most important business application for the internet. And Postini makes email flow day after day after day!
