    Nowhere in this article is Germany's debt-to-GDP ratio mentioned. It is larger than in the US. Maybe that's why they have recently adopted fiscal conservativism. They had to. Some of their government bonds failed to sell at the most recent auction.

    On the bright side, high trade deficit levels across Europe may cap the rise of the Euro. German exporters could benefit from their spendthrift neighbors doing the work of keeping the currency from appreciating. Then there is lots of room for economic growth next door in eastern Europe. Also, Germany's level of energy independence and efficiency (aside from the Russian natural gas thing) means that they could do best in a post peak oil world.
