  • Google Chrome: Redefining the Operating System [View article]
Google does cool things, but privacy is still a nagging issue. Login to Google Reader to check your seekingalpha RSS, and you use your email address, with likely your real-name, personal contacts, and plenty of email that they get to data mine. Pop up a google search tab, type in some random and possibly personal thought, and now google can tie that that query directly to your name, along with date/time. Who knows how long it sits there. And no telling if lawyers and politicians can get at it.

  • Points Off for Windows? Assailing the 'Macs Are More Expensive' Assumption [View article]
Hardware to run windows is cheaper and faster, but MS Windows is like a high maintenance mistress. If you know how to manage it, you can do so cheaply, with great satisfaction. But otherwise, costs (and security risks) will mount, and you are very likely better off with Apple, because its OS its more reliable and secure.

  • Netbook Market: The Specs Game Is on [View article]
connectivity is still an issue with these devices. Cell 3G on every device would be great, but data plans are expensive, and the two year commitment is annoying. Maybe a consumer could buy one data plan that worked for both their netbook and smartphone.

a sub 3 pound netbook with 1440 x 900 video, 2G ram, dual core CPU, and 6cell battery, all for under $500 would be awesome.

  • iPod Touch: Is It an iPod or iPhone? [View article]
I was in the market for an ultra-portable, and decided on an Asus eee PC. Granted, its not quite the same solution as an iPod Touch, because its two pounds. But its very tote-able to a coffee shop, has 6 hours of battery, a solid state drive, and blue tooth, for those with a smartphone / data plane. My version is Linux, so I have a train-load of free software I can use, and am not confined to "Apple Store". Right now, mine is on my desktop, running an SSH & VNC server, so I can operate it entirely from my desktop, and get data in & out with a 19" LCD and full sized keyboard.
