For example , years ago , they promoted a BS or 4 year degree for nurses training , RN . This merely created a HUGE nursing shortage . the job can be done with a 2 year associate degree + on the job training . I SHOULD know firsthand , as I was in the industry for 28 years .With the new healthcare reform , nursing salaries are going down , has to for overall cost reduction . 4 year degree for GOD awlful , stressful work that's going to pay less ? I concur with your sentiments . When one makes BAD financial decisions , the taxpayers should NOT be on the hook to bail them out . Why can't she live with 1 of her children? When I collapsed on a ICU floor in 2004 of a massive MI + was resusitated , I would have been in DEEP Sh*T had I not practiced " fiscal responsibility ". There indeed was a HUGE surplus of cash in the food BEFORE the locked fund was unlocked in 1983 to be used for " general government purposes " How do you think Clinton balanced the budget ? What pays for Iraq? The Social Security taxes . i would be furious if I was you too . Many European people that are approaching retirement near where I live are returning home . Many Europeans state " the US does not care for their elderly ".The SS administration gives all the BS about " you will get 40 % of your pre-retirement income ". Ha , maybe if you make minimum wage all your life ! . if you go to college + work like a dog , you get maybe 30 % . The ONLY ones who made $ in the IRA's + 401 K's were the fund managers . the investors made little + have lost about 50 % or more ! Note this also happened in the 2000-2003 market crash .

When I paid into SS for decades , the Fica tax rate was raised on ave every 2 years .I agree the first generation , who rec'd benefits paid little into the system . The cost of food + fuel were low , so they were able to make it well fed + comfortably , no frills life .Another point you make i agree with it that the boomers did not have enough kids . My own mother puts this in my face often . My reply , " the boomers couldn't have kids , the women had to get educated + work llike dogs to make it ".The boomers ALSO helped their parents with financial help . The boomers kids can't or won't do this as they had to have the large lifestyle with debt levels attached .
