My Altoona contact graciously shared some time ...

Q; Any thoughts on whether there could (and will) be any "stealth" testing of NS-999? Anything "practical" that could be done totally inside the building and thus out of sight?

A: The shop has a load test cell where they can connect a locomotive and test it as if it were pulling a train, but without moving. With 999 being so different than anything else, I'm not sure if they can even use it. Otherwise, there isn't really any indoor space to test it. Most of the track at the shop is behind buildings and away from prying eyes, particularly the test track, which is about 1/3rd mile long.

Q: Heard any buzz about among the first to "engineer" this baby? (sorry if that's not the right term!) Are their people vying for that "honor" or is that something a program manager decides without input from the "troops?" Do you anticipate any special training, or is it pretty much intended to be obvious to an experienced person? Are most/all of the testers of Gen-1 still around?

A: Of the few people who ran 999 previously, only one has retired. To be honest, only a few people really care to have anything to do with it, and they're not the same people who ran it already. When they're ready to test it in the yard, they'll call an extra engineer most likely, then instruct him on the spot on the basics, then expect him to take it from there.

Q: Is Altoona regularly staffed (such that there might need to do some roundhouse "switching") on 2nd or 3rd shift?

A: Juniata works all hours of the day and they've been known to also move engines around at all hours of the day.

Q: If not both 2nd and 3rd, are their ever priority projects worked on 2nd or 3rd shift (and not having another public failure (or just normal "bug fixing") seems to be a priority!)?

A: I can't be sure, but I'd say there's a good chance 999 is only getting work done on 1st shift when management is around.

Q: We've seen pics of the "cover" that was removed, but I take it the racking cases are quite different than on Gen-1, and I believe something was said about the new ones being taller. Can you tell me anything about how (or if?) these new racks will be covered ... will they still use/adapt the old cover?

Seemed like a lot of "doors" on those racks, and that it would be nice to have "easy" access to, but I guess the hope is that not much (or often) access will be needed, and maybe removing the cover is pretty fast, easy, and trivial ...

A: The old hood won't be used. The new racks are too large and barely fit on the the engine as it is. They tell me it will get painted as-is. They also tell me the batteries have not be installed in the racks yet.

"You'll be happy to hear 999 is back in the shop as of a week or two ago."

Good, not great, news. Not unexpected to us. But nothing to help assess the value "delta" at a time when we're so concerned about financing. No announcement of Truck Show appearances. ePower web site unchanged ... that is out of date and confusing. So if you're just now checking out AXPW for investment, you might be a little underwhelmed. Could Axion have hired/shared an intern to help ePower with their web presence ... just a little?

So once again, much better than a sharp stick in the eye, but could have been done a lot better. Sure hope there's more promotion with some specifics to come soon. I actually think some specifics (rollout plans for example,) even if they're not super gonzo, are better than very high level generalities ... though you better meet what ever low bar you set.

Remember that "exclusive" with Rosewater? So far, it hasn't paid off, has it? Not to say it won't, but I don't see the stock price taking off on this release. Reasonably deep pocketed potential investors probably read these kind of announcements with a jaded eye ... they've seen a million of them.

Sorry to be Debbie Downer ... just trying to "keep it real." We've been patient ... I think we'll have to continue to be. It's hard ...

    Monthly Altoona NS-999 update:

"I really don’t know where they’re at with it, but it’s been inside for a few weeks now.

If they test it in the yard, people will be able to see it from 8th Street. 8th Street bridge does have a side walk on the west side.

All the photos posted from the turntable area are taken without trespassing. 6th street dead ends at the water treatment plant for the shop."

Penn State University and Norfolk Southern Railroad have received a $400,000 Federal Railroad Administration Research and Development Grant to continue their work in building an emissions-free locomotive.

Norfolk Southern will also contribute $590,000 in private sector funding to the partnership.

Sorry if this is a repeat ... don't keep up like I used to

Tesla Motors' (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk on Q3 2014 Results -- Earnings Call Transcript

    http://seekingalpha.co...

    "Elon Musk

My top advice really for anyone who says they've got some breakthrough battery technologies, please send us a sample cell, okay, don't send us PowerPoint. Just send us one cell that works with all appropriate caveats that would be great. That's really -- that sorts out the nonsense and the claims that aren't actually true. Talk is super cheap; the battery industry has to have more BS in it than any industry I've ever encountered. It's insane."

Ask nicely, and sometimes you shall receive.

A minor bit of online sleuthing over the last 6 months led to a firm offering the Energy Hub. Sent them an email recently about their current perspectives and got this back:

"We are very close with the Rosewater group and are very excited about this technology and are getting more calls about it every month. “Sandy” did spur some interest in our market mainly in areas that couldn’t do generators. We have specked a few of the units that are going into homes that are months away from being occupied so we’ll see how it goes. Once a sale is made Rosewater will be intimately involved in the design and implementation on the first few units which is a great service and comfort to know that we will have that level of support."

I asked them in the original mail and in a followup several days ago about identifying them, and they didn't respond to that question, so I'm going to leave it at this for now. Keep in mind ... just one data point ...

On the other hand, we still have no UL certification. Some of us saw that coming, but still, it's once again a disappointment.

    NSC timing has disappointed.

Lack of any PowerCube sales has disappointed.

No follow on from the Net Zero Naval Yard ... after another disappointing delay even in delivery.

ePower had delays too from TG's CC "promises."

Do you think he's now learned his lesson about making any kind of promise that he doesn't totally control?

Can you really blame anyone from saying screw it, I'm tired of this and selling?

At this point, you have to wonder whether they might even hold a PR about "good" but not required disclosures till after the new year. At this point, I don't see any Hub sales that would be material to this quarter even if we did get the UL cert. Didn't Rosewater say they were going very slow at first to make sure the first customers were totally satisfied?
