  • Apple to Open 50 More Stores - Let's Be Careful, Steve [View article]
    The author is correct. The shinny new stores are successful of course, but look out 10, 15, 25 years from now and it's possible Steve won't be around, thus no new products to keep them buzzing with energy.

    While I agree internationally there is room for growth, here in the US there is certainly cause for concern by expanding too rapidly.

  • How Soon Can Apple's Market Cap Surpass Microsoft's? [View article]
    @jamesllegade -

    actually, OSX is far more OPEN than Windows. OSX is over 90% open, you can download the source by googling: Darwin Open Source.

    the strong security is because of the way Apple built and maintains OSX and the fact it's based on BSD Unix... which is the most secure OS is common use today.

    so the "Mac ecosystem" is open which is why it's "secure", windows is "closed source" that's why it's full of holes.

    @BobSmith - you are forgetting or not understanding that Macs are based on BSD Unix, so there won't be a virus or security issues on OSX. A lot of naive people somehow think it's related to "market share", but that is not the case. The main reason Mac users don't have to worry is the way "root" if fully separated from the "Admin" account. Windows had everything mix together, plus they had ActiveX and some auto run features. Macs were designed to be on networks from the start, so all this was figured out long before Windows was even around... that's why OSX is far more battle tested than any version of Windows could ever hope to be. You'll see a handful of trojans on Macs in the coming decade, but never a virus, Unix simply doesn't allow it.

    no, MSFT was around 36 at the time AAPL was at 200, so they are once again getting closer, but haven't yet past MSFT, but it should happen in 4 to 14 months.

  • Apple Netbook Will Fill Newspaper Void [View article]
    @Ird

    yes, but if you net it all out, using computers is far more damaging to the earth than newspapers is my point.

    as a society we have brainwashed our own selves into thinking computers somehow use little energy, but even on this sunday morning there are 10's of millions of them running in homes and businesses with nary a person in sight.

    while there are 10's of millions of newspapers running on coffee tables and couches right now as well... but consuming zero energy.

    Yes, but just think how much more coal & oil is burned to keep those computers on and displaying the same information.

    Newspapers & books wipe out whole forests each and every day, but the heat from coal and oil wipes out huge sections of ice which keeps us cool, just like trees.

    The only solution is conservation and nuclear power if we are to continue to lead the lifestyle we enjoy. Watch the wonderful "Story of Stuff" to get a feel of the whole picture...

    @Roger Knights -

    Well, that's not what the future looks like. Yes, newspapers used to be the bastion of reliable reporting... but then local TV took over in the 60's... so we are just seeing the next logical jump to Twitter, Blogs and real time iPhone cameras (in the near future) to do reporting on local news.

    Apple doesn't have to lift a finger, hit ratings and user ratings will determine who is honest and accurate, not someone sitting behind a desk or "network" camera.

    It's all very "generational", so do worry... the demise of the newspaper has been predicted for decades and slowly but surely it is happening...

    Get a Mac, learn iMovie, get an iPhone and you'll be powerful over the next few decades.

    All this was mapped out by Apple in the 80's, so it's no massive surprise.

    @theGadFly

    The iPhone and Touch already run a slim version of OSX. A stylus will never appear on an iPhone / Touch or Tablet, Apple forever got rid of them during the 2007 keynote. Search ebay if you want one for the iPhone, etc.

    Development is already open for OSX and the iPhone, google iPhone Developer for more info.

    Jay, don't make everyone laugh. Apple has been working on tablets since the mid 1980's. Microsoft has done nothing innovative, they only, "years later" try and copy Apple's ideas. Apple invented the PDA space with the Newton, now you see Palm, Blackberry and of course the iPhone.

    Google around for "Knowledge Navigator" and you'll see Apple was over a decade ahead of Bill Gates and his copy cat criminals.

    Apple has set the direction for the computer industry since 1976, Microsoft has done nothing to contribute, so get your facts straight.

    to check your actual signal strength, here is how to put your iphone in field test mode...

    Dial: *3001#12345#* (* =STAR)
    Touch: Call

    (then in the upper left corner you'll notice a tiny gray number, and that's your current signal strength)

  • Should Apple Be Worth More Than Google? [View article]
    But always keep in mind, search engines only have a half life of 5 or so years, so Google won't be in anyone's vocabulary in another 5 years. All search engines go through a rapid rise... then slow fall...

    Do people remember Alta Vista? Nope. Lycos? Nope. Excite? Nope. Yahoo? Still a little bit. Google? Yep! but it's just the search engine of the day, another one will come out of the woodwork and replace it by 2015, it's how this business works.
