  • If it's a healthy sign when small caps (IWM) lead large caps (SPY) during a rally, then the recent move higher should come with a warning. Small caps failed to take out their July 19 high and instead made a series of lower highs that month, writes Joe Bell. Actually, the S&P outperformance has been going on for longer than 4 weeks.  [View news story]
    Amen to all that, @ids

interesting, thanks. long UTX.......5% of my portfolio and growing...I decided to take some of the dividends to keep my portfolio in balance, but I wonder if a case can be made for giving UTX a greater than 5% allocation (generally not wise)as I really think the outlook is very favorable with great growth potential.

  • Building An Intelligent REIT Portfolio With 'Wide Moat' Revenue Streams [View article]
I really appreciate this article. I am long PCL and HCP and think I might add more REITs to my portfolio in an attempt to be more diversified within the sector and also as a defensive play within the broader market. great food for thought!

I thought about it and decided to sell all my shares of STX today.I figure I have a profit of about 26% over my original investment. I know I could have waited to see if the price went higher, but I have a sufficient amount invested in tech stocks, so now I just have a little less.

  • What Would Mr. Benjamin Graham Think Of 3M Company? [View article]
really well written and thorough. thank-you. I am long 3M - because it's a stock I inherited. Don't know if I would have chosen it on my own, but......I think, as you say, that it's a good company, so I keep it and reinvest the dividends for now.

  • America's 'Trente Glorieuses'? [View article]
Someone told me that at the time of our country's founding there was a faction that thought voting rights should only be apportioned to a certain segment of the population like the ruling class; this group felt that realistically only a certain portion of the country or any people have the intelligence to understand the complexities of the issues and problems facing them.

I think democratic institutions need literate people, and being "well educated" by some measures may nearly bypass literacy. And I am talking about literacy which as a concept and skill implies and includes a plenitude of reasoning and thinking skills.

Since not all people are intelligent, just as all people are not stupid, a case can be made for the merits of a moral education and its benefits to a society. 'The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom."
