  • Wells Fargo upgrades Phillips 66 (PSX) to Outperform while cutting Western Refining (WNR) to Market Perform, as the firm lowers its 2013 EPS estimates across the refining sector based on the significant narrowing of the Brent/WTI differential and a narrower light/heavy spread likely to start in Q3. The firm continues to prefer Marathon Petroleum (MPC), Tesoro (TSO) and Valero (VLO) as its favorite refiners. [View news story]
I own MRO, though I sold off quite a bit of it earlier in the year. Long MPC though.

  • More on McDonald's (MCD) Q2 earnings: "Global comparable sales for July are expected to be relatively flat ... Our results for the remainder of the year are expected to remain challenged." Q2 results showed global comparable sales up 1%, revenues up 2%, and operating income up 2%. U.S. comparable sales gained 1%, Europe's fell 0.1% and Asia/Pacific, Middle East, and Africa fell 0.3% (led by negative numbers in China, Japan, and Australia). CC at 10 ET. Shares -2.2% premarket. Global sales up 1%; US sales up 1%. So it's not what analysts wanted, but still UP. Get real: global and US economies are not exactly booming. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize there's a connection there

MCD has shown growth, and these results are not in any way catastrophic or mind-bending or life-altering. Stock market overreations make me tired.

  • UBS and Raymond James downgrade Accenture (ACN -13.2%) following an FQ3 revenue miss market by light consulting sales/orders, and soft guidance. UBS' Steve Milunovich, who now rates shares Neutral: "With Oracle and Accenture missing, enterprise demand appears to remain weak, which probably means a soft earnings season for large computer names." He thinks IBM (IBM -2.8%) could still deliver 2H services growth due to less consulting exposure and strong orders, but believes risk has grown. • Defying a weak market in early trading are shares of Diebold (DBD +0.1%) which got a positive mention in Barron's over the weekend. DBD's shareholders have "suffered long enough," Jacqueline Doherty says, noting that the stock should benefit from "an ATM-upgrade cycle in the U.S., driven by new features such as check-deposit automation and videoconferencing, and the expansion of ATM use abroad." [View news story]
Yea! Bought Diebold about 8 months ago. I like the industry and the company, and its long history of uninterrupted dividends is in some measure confirmation of its longevity and stability.

  • Big Ben made a big mistake in the way he announced the Fed's plan to end QE yesterday, laments CNBC's Larry Kudlow. When it comes to ending the bond-buying program, the training wheels needed to come off slowly. But, while investors were still pondering exactly when a tapering of the program might begin, Mr. Bernanke laid out a plan to completely end QE in roughly one year or less. The abrupt policy shift immediately has sparked a rout on Wall Street, and it's going to shake up confidence even more, Kudlow says, perhaps even slowing the already anemic recovery. [View news story]
Is Bernanke totally out of touch with how average people think?
