  • FT's Lex: MetLife deserving of SIFI status [View news story]
FT: "Regulators should regulate for the next crisis, not for the past one".

This comment is open ended, giving unlimited power to regulators - a typically European concept. In a free market, it is the decision of the buyer as to the risk he is prepared to take - it must not be the decision of the possibly less informed regulator.

Congratulations! on an excellent paper treating a difficult, important but otherwise unfortunately overlooked subject.

  • Barrick Gold Is Still Paying For Its Sins [View article]
This article lacks perspective on Barrick Gold, including its entire mine portfolio, although mention is made in passing that some of their mines are rather profitable. Therefore, for the shareholder, it does not provide support in the investment decision making process.

  • Why The Airbus A380 Is On A Dead Track And Will Be Beaten By The Boeing 777X [View article]
If planes are flown at passenger capacity, the A380 with a capacity of 525, seems to be at a great advantage to the 777-9X at a 407 capacity, acknowledging that this is offset by fuel efficiency.

With some constraints, the airlines can control whether planes are flying at or below full capacity. It is to their benefit to fly as close to capacity as possible, thus illustrating the benefit of the larger A380s.

  • An End To Our Relationship With Yahoo, A New Era For Equity Research [View article]
Yahoo has useful news items and readily available statistics about companies. I go to Yahoo first and then to SA.

Now that you are asking, I am rather annoyed that SA now keeps your best write-ups for a special and very expensive membership. You show us something about these articles in the introductory sentences and then tell us to add another $1800 annual fee to get the remainder of the story. This is the old fashioned "come on" - very egregious.

On top of that, I checked one time into the cost for the expanded program and your sales person was demeaning.

Be careful not to get too arrogant from your current success.

  • Target Comes Out Ahead Vs. Wal-Mart And Family Dollar [View article]
I sold my TGT shares immediately when I saw groceries on their shelves. People are willing to travel to stores when they are purchasing mid and high ticket items, but for groceries there is always another closer more convenient store, e.g., Kroger, FDO, etc. Thus, groceries sales at Target could take place as mainly only as secondary to buying more expensive items. Displacing more expensive products with groceries seemed to be counterproductive (desperate?)

  • Merck's Aftermath [View article]
The author misses a very important point. R&D consists of two distinct phases (1) invention/discovery and (2) setting product tolerances, specifications, and determination of product efficacy. Creativity is critically important in phase 1, but discipline and thoroughness play the key role phase 2.
My recommended approach is to have a small elite group performing in phase 1 (the thinkers/planners) with the majority of the R&D professionals in phase 2. Moreover, the researchers in phase 1 must understand their ultimate goal is to raise the net value of their employer.

  • Corning: Riding Multiple Uptrends, Lifted By Gorilla Glass [View article]
Mr. Chiu should include Corning's investment in Dow Corning and consequently their investment in the ill fated Hemlock, manufacturers of polysilicones. The negative impact of Hemlock may be substantial.

To better understand the Nokia/Microsoft interface, it is necessary to review the corresponding "risks" section in the Microsoft report, as well that in the Nokia report.
