Vismadeb: Thanks for the selective reinvestment thought ... I probably need to sit down with him anyway - time to finish off 2013 and put the first 15k for 2014 to work...
I believe the basic quality of stocks I'm holding is good as all but one (ABBV) are ones found on David Fish's Champion's list (one of my starting points for stock selection).

Great discussion / exchange of thoughts. I appreciate the various perspectives as each person's situation is unique. I'm relatively new to investing (doing my own for about 6 -7 years now) but have my 401(k) holdings set up to DRIP. However, as the market was heading higher and higher in 2013, I was wondering if this was a good strategy. Example: I was excited to acquire Colgate 5 years ago at an equivalent of $33.71 vs. today's price, but I'm not as excited given its current valuation with a P.E. around 25.

With about 5 years until I start thinking about drawing on some of the income, my sense is I'll be changing the DRIP decision at some point.

California... the plastic bag issue is a big issue locally with several local communities banning single-use plastic bags. Many places are actually pushing use of their logo'd multi-use bags where consumers reuse grocery bags or other shopping bags. Several local stores are involved in that push...

Thanks, Dingolo - Where I see the reducing demand on a personal level is how business in my industry is done (real estate consultancy / land use and building permitting). Although many of the finished products (mortgage documents, real estate contracts, etc.) are larger than 20 - 30 years ago, we exchange a lot of business mail, drafts of contracts, mark-up of plans, etc. electronically. I'm currently working on a 50-site project for one of the major wireless carriers and all the paper for the project currently resides in one plastic tub (roughly 12" - 14" wide) of the 50 file-folders. I can pick it up fairly easily. However, the electronic files for the project is another matter. I just clicked Sites Properties for the project's sub-directory on my computer and it contains 4,616 files totaling 4.58 GB.

Its interesting, too, how some schools have changed. I once served in a military group in the mid-70's where there was a school for the program that lasted 6 weeks. Binders, etc. filled our lockers like in high school and were turned in / destroyed at the end of the school. I was back at the school for a reunion last year and in speaking with an instructor was told each student now is given an iPad with all the material for the school when they check in and then it receives automatic updates when the students graduate and are sent to their respective posts. The school also upgrades its course material as things change even if mid-stream in the program.

Certainly agree about the wasteful nature of our society - something several local communities are trying to address by passing ordinances banning the use of single use plastic bags.

Interesting article in WSJ on September 11 regarding IP: " ... plans to close its biggest paper mill (Courtland Alabama), displacing 1,100 workers and citing shrinking demand for paper in an increasingly digital world."

  • This Company Has Paid A Dividend For 118 Years And Increased It The Last 50 Years [View article]
I'm somewhat late-to-the-game and CL was one of my first investments in late 2008 after I got ticked off at the "professionals" who seemed more interested in lining their pockets than mine (Wauchovia, great stock, can't loose!). I decided to make my own decisions after that since it was my money at risk and CL hit my criteria. That $67.42 stock looks pretty good now at >$115 per share and with DRIP since the time I purchased, is now paying 3.9% based on my cost basis. No, its not going to make me rich but I certainly sleep better at night with stocks of this quality in my portfolio.

  • Load Up On Dividend Stocks After A Fiscal Cliff Sell-Off [View article]
I have each of the "mother-ship" stocks you mention and recently added to the MCD holding when it dropped below $90. As a side-note, interesting column in the Champions spreadsheet (CG and CH) are the current prices relative to 52 week highs and lows.

(Channeling my best Jim Cramer for CLWR stockholders): sell, sell, sell, sell, sell.. :-)

I think Jim mentioned late in the January 8 show he'd have a comment on the January 9 program.

Disclosure: I do not hold (nor have I ever held) any positions in CLWR, DISH or S and have no plans to be involved in any transactions involving their shares for the foreseeable future.

With ABT now paying 1.7% ($.56 / $33.27) and ABBV at 4.7% ($1.60 / $34.83), I'm not as excited about ABT as I once was. Thoughts?

    In a 2:1 split, shares are doubled. If you hold 100 shares on Friday, the 10th, you'll hold 200 shares on Monday, the 13th. Same value (80 * 100 = 40 * 200).

  • Coca-Cola: Time To Rethink Its Dividend [View article]
From the company's website: Q&A's regarding the split:

When will the stock split and the amendment to the certificate of incorporation be effective?

The key dates to be aware of are as follows:

The record date, which is July 27, 2012, determines which shareowners are entitled to receive one additional share for each share owned as of the record date due to the split. July 27, 2012 is also the effective date of the amendment to the certificate of incorporation that will double the number of shares of authorized common stock.
The payment date (or distribution date), which is August 10, 2012, is the date shareowners of record are mailed notification of the shares received as a result of the split.
The ex-split date, which is August 13, 2012, is the date the common stock will trade on the NYSE under the ticker symbol "KO" at the new split-adjusted price.
