  • Why Microsoft Is A Good Buy [View article]
Thanks for the comment / reminder (one of the benchmarks I now consider)... If I'm comparing things correctly, industry seems to be trading at about +15x earnings.. wonder if the price is being held back based on market's perception (rightly or wrongly) about Microsoft's ability to keep up with developments of cloud, mobile and smart phone issues mentioned in other comments and therefore future earnings potential.

I bought MSFT on 12/29/2003 from my then-broker who advised "everyone should have Microsoft in their portfolio." Price on 12/29/2003 = 28.14; price today = 27.07. At the end of 2003 the company had nearly $6.5B in cash and now have $51.5B and have been profitable every year. I don't see it as a problem making money and improving their products, but clearly (IMHO) there is a management problem translating the ability to make money into value for shareholders. For fear of spewing my computer screen, I won't run a comparison had I invested in AAPL on that date. I keep MSFT as a reminder to find my own comfort before making an investment - tip of the cap to many writers at Seeking Alpha for sharing their opinions and technical analysis that have helped me along that journey.

  • 10 Big Oil Dividends to Watch [View article]
RDS dividends may be subject to a withholding tax in their home country. They were when I owned them a few years ago - sold as it was a holding in a retirement account.

DGI - Any comment about holding KMP - or other MLP's - in a personal retirement account? I'm self-employed so self manage my own 401(k) and have a couple of MLP's in the portfolio. Thanks - always enjoy the articles.

  • Telecom Stocks: Verizon or AT&T? [View article]
@ AS: See what T's customer service is like when you try to leave. (i) For a reason unrelated to quality of service, I opt'd to port my cell phone number to another carrier when the opportunity arose and a month later found AT&T was still sending me bills even though I was no longer on their network. I got in touch with a customer service person who informed me I could not port my cell phone and actually was yelling at me when I finally hung up on him. I wrote both to the FCC and the California PUC about the matter and finally received a refund as well as a call apologizing for the conduct from someone identifying themselves as being with AT&T in Atlanta. However, it should not take complaints to the FCC and CPUC in order for customer service personnel to be informed on basic customer rights and how to treat people. (ii) Following Cingular's acquisition of AT&T, long-term customers such as my wife who was on month-to-month at the time and was operating on the older TDMA network had their phones turned off by Cingular / AT&T - just threw the swtich, no notice, nothing (and I heard this happen to several other friends as well). Just all of a sudden one day she didn't have service. She went to the store and was informed Cingular / AT&T would require her to (i) purchase a new phone and (ii) sign a new two-year contract if she wanted to use her cell phone - and then (same day as service was discontinued) was informed that her number that she'd had for about 5 years was not available and was given to someone else... Sorry, that's not the type of customer service I need nor expect from a wireless carrier.

  • 3 Stocks that Offer Growth and Dividends Too [View article]
What about foreign taxes, though? I've held Shell stock in my retirement account for several years but am always a bit miffed over the deductions for taxes that are withheld from the payment of dividends.
