  • This Company Has Paid A Dividend For 118 Years And Increased It The Last 50 Years [View article]
I'm somewhat late-to-the-game and CL was one of my first investments in late 2008 after I got ticked off at the "professionals" who seemed more interested in lining their pockets than mine (Wauchovia, great stock, can't loose!). I decided to make my own decisions after that since it was my money at risk and CL hit my criteria. That $67.42 stock looks pretty good now at >$115 per share and with DRIP since the time I purchased, is now paying 3.9% based on my cost basis. No, its not going to make me rich but I certainly sleep better at night with stocks of this quality in my portfolio.

(with a grin)... think I'll keep with D4L rather than UBS for analysis. Since the Dividend Stock Analysis for AFL came out, the stock is up 5%.

DGI - Any comment about holding KMP - or other MLP's - in a personal retirement account? I'm self-employed so self manage my own 401(k) and have a couple of MLP's in the portfolio. Thanks - always enjoy the articles.

  • 7 Stocks Providing Positive Feedback With Higher Dividends [View article]
Thanks, Dingolo - Where I see the reducing demand on a personal level is how business in my industry is done (real estate consultancy / land use and building permitting). Although many of the finished products (mortgage documents, real estate contracts, etc.) are larger than 20 - 30 years ago, we exchange a lot of business mail, drafts of contracts, mark-up of plans, etc. electronically. I'm currently working on a 50-site project for one of the major wireless carriers and all the paper for the project currently resides in one plastic tub (roughly 12" - 14" wide) of the 50 file-folders. I can pick it up fairly easily. However, the electronic files for the project is another matter. I just clicked Sites Properties for the project's sub-directory on my computer and it contains 4,616 files totaling 4.58 GB.

Its interesting, too, how some schools have changed. I once served in a military group in the mid-70's where there was a school for the program that lasted 6 weeks. Binders, etc. filled our lockers like in high school and were turned in / destroyed at the end of the school. I was back at the school for a reunion last year and in speaking with an instructor was told each student now is given an iPad with all the material for the school when they check in and then it receives automatic updates when the students graduate and are sent to their respective posts. The school also upgrades its course material as things change even if mid-stream in the program.

Certainly agree about the wasteful nature of our society - something several local communities are trying to address by passing ordinances banning the use of single use plastic bags.

Interesting article in WSJ on September 11 regarding IP: " ... plans to close its biggest paper mill (Courtland Alabama), displacing 1,100 workers and citing shrinking demand for paper in an increasingly digital world."

With ABT now paying 1.7% ($.56 / $33.27) and ABBV at 4.7% ($1.60 / $34.83), I'm not as excited about ABT as I once was. Thoughts?

  • Coca-Cola: Time To Rethink Its Dividend [View article]
From the company's website: Q&A's regarding the split:

When will the stock split and the amendment to the certificate of incorporation be effective?

The key dates to be aware of are as follows:

The record date, which is July 27, 2012, determines which shareowners are entitled to receive one additional share for each share owned as of the record date due to the split. July 27, 2012 is also the effective date of the amendment to the certificate of incorporation that will double the number of shares of authorized common stock.
The payment date (or distribution date), which is August 10, 2012, is the date shareowners of record are mailed notification of the shares received as a result of the split.
The ex-split date, which is August 13, 2012, is the date the common stock will trade on the NYSE under the ticker symbol "KO" at the new split-adjusted price.

  • My Take On Kinder Morgan [View article]
Interesting article in Friday's WSJ (April 13) about a proposed KMP project in Canada - not sure if the link would work so I'll just refer you to and the article is titled: "With a $5 Billion Pipeline Project, Canada Looks to Bypass U.S. for Asia."

Info about the $5B project can also be found on the Kinder Morgan website's Recent News section.

Yes, Aflac benefits from a strong yen/dollar exchange rate. The company mentions this in its financial reports. As a non-professional, I won't risk characterizing the impacts inaccurately and refer you to their most recent quarterly report which can be found at:

The company addresses the issue in greater detail on the first page of the quarterly report.

  • Why Microsoft Is A Good Buy [View article]
Thanks for the comment / reminder (one of the benchmarks I now consider)... If I'm comparing things correctly, industry seems to be trading at about +15x earnings.. wonder if the price is being held back based on market's perception (rightly or wrongly) about Microsoft's ability to keep up with developments of cloud, mobile and smart phone issues mentioned in other comments and therefore future earnings potential.

  • Why Microsoft Is A Good Buy [View article]
I bought MSFT on 12/29/2003 from my then-broker who advised "everyone should have Microsoft in their portfolio." Price on 12/29/2003 = 28.14; price today = 27.07. At the end of 2003 the company had nearly $6.5B in cash and now have $51.5B and have been profitable every year. I don't see it as a problem making money and improving their products, but clearly (IMHO) there is a management problem translating the ability to make money into value for shareholders. For fear of spewing my computer screen, I won't run a comparison had I invested in AAPL on that date. I keep MSFT as a reminder to find my own comfort before making an investment - tip of the cap to many writers at Seeking Alpha for sharing their opinions and technical analysis that have helped me along that journey.
