  • Alliance Resources (ARLP -1.1%) catches the skeptical eye of John Hempton, who wonders how the company doesn't appear to be suffering given the beating its coal industry brethren are taking. "Coal mining is not a complicated business - and unless you have a substantially better resource than anyone else, it is difficult to make these sort of numbers." [View news story]
    They can make a profit because of;

    1. Non-union mines
    2. Cutting edge longwall technology
    3. Cheap reserves in the Illinois Basin
    4. Long range contracts
    5. Excellent management and partnerships

  • Vivus: Primed To Hit $30 [View article]
    LOL....

    Belviq is undoubtedly an effective treatment. Unfortunately it has already taken a "back seat" in the market place. I sold out and purchased ALRP. Yes, a coal stock.

  • Vivus Vs. Citron, Buy Vivus [View article]
    Agreed. As I posted earlier, the wolves are trying to manipulate the market and the sheep are panic selling. I bought more Vivus when the opportunity presented itself.

  • Shares of Vivus (VVUS -9%) spike lower on a cautious report from Citron Research, noting the situation is quite similar to that of Nitromed eight years ago. VVUS' intellectual property protection is "riddled with flaws," Citron says, and it's astounded by the lack of due diligence on the Street regarding the issue. TheStreet.com's Adam Feuerstein disagrees, however, saying there's nothing new in the report.  [View news story]

  • Vivus Gets FDA Approval For Obesity Pill Qsymia [View article]
    Belviq is for "models" that want to take a pill and lose a pound or two. Qsymia is for the "tanks" that want to shed a lot of fat and regain their health.

    I agree with diet and exercise. I know it works but it requires effort and too many people are just plain lazy. Everyone wants to take a pill and get their "sexy" back with a minimum amount of "bother". If I were obese and wanted to lose weight there is no doubt I would choose Qsymia.

  • Vivus (VVUS +0.2%) shares reverse course after suffering heavy losses earlier and hover around zero after USA Today reports that the FDA has approved its Qnexa/Qysemia diet drug. However, no other news organizations appear to have reported the story, and it's not on the FDA website. Update: the linked-story in this MC seems to have been taken down. Vivus shares -0.6%.  [View news story]

  • How Did It All Go So Wrong For Patriot Coal? [View article]
    I agree to a point. I do, however, believe that current cutting edge longwall technology will enable certain producers to dominate the market as "cheap coal" producers. These full extraction methods not only utilize the reserves to their fullest potential (as opposed to room and pillar mining) but have the lowest cost per ton for extraction. In my opinion the companies employing this technology (longwall mining) in the Illinois Basin will be the ones turning a profit. For example, Alliance (ARLP) with their partner White Oak Resources, LLC is a company to keep ones eye on.......just my opinion.

    I agree Papayamon. Peabody spun off PCX for a strategic reason. These wheels were set into motion a long time ago.
