  • Life After Coal: Coming Sooner than You Think [View article]
5.5 mill and Denmark has nat. Gas from the Northsea fields. We even export our surplus production to our neighbouring countries. That said the main fuel for producing electricity in Denmark is still coal.

The idea that energy will be more and more expensive by going over to alternative energy is an idea concepted by people refusing to look just a little into the future. Fact is that coal prices has been rising, oil prices has been rising and energy consumption is rising, particular due to China and somewhat India. Meanwhile most alternative energy sources are steadily declining in their production costs. So its about investing into the future and not looking back into the happy 50ies. Its about getting MORE energy sources into place so we AVOID rising costs of electricity, which to some point is inevitable, but with new energy sources we avoid it going to through the roof.
Doing nothing will be disaster. The world is not the same as yesterday and tomorrow it will be different.

  • Obama's Green Obsession: More Harm Than Good? [View article]
    Rubbish!
Im from Denmark and the part in this article is plain out wrong.
"The country is now in the ridiculous situation where its theoretical generating capacity is three times that of peak demand."
There is NO such situation in our country and to the contrary there is a forecast that beginning of 2009 electric prices will be up to 23% higher. That sure as hell doesnt sound like 3 times over capacaty unless you take a peak demand from 1930. Worse is that you try to isolate Denmark when it comes to power. Denmark buys and sells power to its neighbour countries like Norway,Sweden and Germany.
Windpower has for some years been almost on hold in Denmark but is now again picking up pace and the biggest problem is where to place them as worries about windmills are local. Its worries that limits itself to noise, local nature and the aesethic of placing the windmill in the local landscape. Which is why more and more are placed offshore also.
The above article is absolute nonesense and it shows pure desperation by referring to a 30 old study in windmills. Windmills have evovled quiete a bit from then. Now why dont you?

  • As Timminco Shares Go Up, LDK Deal Raises Questions [View article]
    I need to ask.
What is the connection with Greentechmedia and Asensio?. This sound very much like his "reasoning" and both LDK and Timminco has indeed been on his bashing list.

This finally moves GreentechMedia away from my unbiased list and into the "paid talking heads for naked shorters" list.
Ucilia Wang and her "sources" should be invistigated.

  • Should We Listen to Boone Pickens on Oil? [View article]
Its funny how oil at 100$ now is "alright" when it 1 year ago would cause an uproar.

  • Three Reasons Solar Sell-off May Be in Early Innings [View article]
    Three reasons this article fail:

1: Oil and solar do not compete as pointed out by many already. Also consider last year when most solar were most higher and oil much lower.

2: Now it would be great if America would join the alternative wagon and would be a great boost, but look beyound your own backgarden. Solar has so far done great without it and countries like Japan/India/China has voiced they will increase solar and the European Union has come out with plans to have 20% alternative energy by 2020, including solar. If america came out with similar plans, then without a doubt solar would get an even higher boost, but solar can and will do without America.

3: Expensive? Dont look blindly at P/E. The sector has what? an annual expected growth of 40%?. Ofcourse if you dont believe the sector to have this growth then some of the solar companies might be expensive.
Solar has everything going for them. They are getting cheaper and cheaper and its main competitor (coal) is getting more and more expensive. solar is also getting more and more effective. There is no doubt that solar will not only reach grid parity but eventually become cheaper than coal.

  • Light the Way with LDK [View article]
    Regarding the LDK REC argument.
I had stocks in REC till fall last year. Its a very good company no doubt. LDK and REC are 2 companies following 2 very different strategies though.
REC seeks to become fully vertical integrated and is so to a degree now, still ramping up production capacity on the cell and panel part, to meet their big wafer production. They have also been building a new polysilicon plants ( Im afraid to admit I dont know the current status of that 1). REC has plants in the western part of the world in countries like Norway Sweden and America.
LDK seeks to become the world biggest manufactor of wafers and seems to now have accompished this goal. Also it seeks to become a major player in the polysilicon buisness. Its focus in those areas are cost reduction and they seem to go great length for it. Also instead of a fully integrated solar company they instead seek partnerships. I have to admit Ive been quiete impressed with the contracts they have landed the last 10 months.
Which is the best?. They are both very good companies. The reason I swapped to LDK myself is that there seems to be bigger growth and in long term better profit. They have cheap labor, cheap energy, and benefit from a low tax.
LDK will eventually become a huge wafer producer with noone even near them in terms of production capacity and REC on the other hand will become a big fully integrated company where their wafers firstmost go to their own production of cells and then panels.
If we are to use the same words as the author then LDK is the intel of solar and REC the IBM/Dell etc.
