  • Apple Apps' Incredible Success Has Many Marketing Implications [View article]
Not that the competitors aren't still way behind, but they don't have to have 85K apps. A lot of the apps are either redundant or junk. Having *good* games and a solid group of the "utility" apps would get them a long way.

Long AAPL but let's be real ...

  • I Quit the iPhone [View article]
A lot of blogs are rants, so I have no particular complaint about this one. There's information in here that I didn't have before, so what the hell. Of more concern to me is the continuing sentiment that everything ought to be free. Google Voice sounds very cool, but who's going to maintain that "dumb pipe" once the phone companies go out of business? When I look at all their offerings I have to wonder if Google has gone from being a search engine to being some sort of WalMart-like come-to-us-for-everyth... megastore for all things that can be done on the web. I just don't want to see the communications business crumble the way newspapers are. I'm no economist, but something feels wrong about the new model.

  • Bye Bye Apple [View article]
What a strange series of statements to make about a company that's killing in a down economy. Of course you don't see the new areas for Apple to move into and dominate, but that doesn't mean that they don't exist. Apple finds these and others don't; that's why they've performed. You have no idea what Steve Jobs' level of health is, and though I agree we all should have a little more info, the company's performance these last few months should have allayed some of your fears. With China's iPhone market on the way, the near certainty of a video-recording-and-ed... refresh on the iPod, and the likely continued halo effect (did the recent MacBook pro numbers escape you?), AAPL's probably got some room to run. I'm long and staying, so bye bye, Alex!

  • Smartphones: The Mobile Industry Is About to Get 'Blown Apart' [View article]
@O'Kane: can't increase the ringer volume on the iPhone? As in, w/the big rocker switch on the side, next to the physical (thank you, Apple!) ringer mute switch?

Omissions from my earlier post; thanks for the reminders:

    - agree, it's way more than a phone
    - the podcast ease of use has turned out to be unexpectedly huge for me
    - I'm long AAPL w/no plans to change soon

  • Smartphones: The Mobile Industry Is About to Get 'Blown Apart' [View article]
Congratulations on some of the most subjective use of charts I've seen in a while; the article is better off (and actually pretty good) w/o them. That said, I find myself wondering what they'll look like after next month's iPhone 3.0 software update and the subsequent rush of not just new apps but also hardware that can work intelligently w/the iPhone. I don't see anyone else tapping into that market yet. As usual, Apple innovates and others follow.

  • Not Much Juice from Apple's Earnings [View article]
The volume argument has to take into account that the huge volume late last year was largely driven by the uncertainty related to the financial meltdown, the effects of which are still being felt. Current volume is nearing the "normal" state when you look at the 2Y or 5Y view. Apple's latest results are incredible in this economy; what will they do if/when it picks up a/o if they make the China deal? I'm long and staying so, and I don't believe the netbook rumors.

  • Apple Sales Look Healthy [View article]
It's too bad the iPhone name so prominently calls out the phone function because it's so much more than that. The new version of the hardware and software is going to make that clearer than ever.

Editorial note: please don't use apostrophes to create plurals (e.g., "ipod's"! I see it all over the place and it drives me nuts.

  • 'Uniquely American' Is Code for Killing Healthcare Reform [View article]
There are countries that spend half of what we spend on health care with comparable if not better care. It's not a matter of "deserving" health care; it's about being decent human beings instead of selfish greedheads. Everyone should have health care and yes, you can raise my taxes to achieve it.

  • A Good Time to Buy Apple [View article]
Doesn't matter. None of it. There's no logic in the market now and there won't be for a while. Killer quarter? So what; just had one, stock went down. Tons of cash? So what: the dollar's about to tank. Revolutionary new product? So what; "everyone's too poor to buy" and "they should make a cheap sub-notebook (give me a break; do they not understand what Apple's about?). Jobs comes back and looks like George Clooney? So what; he's still probably not telling us everything, or it's a body double. In the end, though, your money's got to somewhere. Mine's in AAPL until further notice. They just make great stuff. That's about as fundamental as it gets.

  • Recession Takes a Bite Out of Mac Sales [View article]
I have all the netbook I need with the iPhone in my pocket. Apple got a nice chunk o' change from the *two* that I bought just before Christmas, not to mention the other five people in my group at work who've also bought them. Now we're buying apps (more $$$ for Apple), and when the new iMacs come out I'll probably get one and dump my Windows machine. Yes, I'm entering the Reality Distortion Field ... and loving it. Disclosure: I'm long AAPL, and will stay that way for some time to come, because this company builds great stuff and is the cash-printing machine it deserves to be. Maybe while the SEC is investigating the SJ health disclosures they can also shed some light in those dark, dirty corners where the AAPL shorts spew their misinformation. Throw 'em in the cage w/Madoff and the rest.

I second that, Ed. Even that's too good for him and somebody needs to be made an example of. You can bet there are plenty more out there waiting to pull the same scam (if they haven't already). Throw them in the cage with the Enron execs and let 'em all rot together.
