Looks like the pre-market enthusiasm didn't hold out. No worries, ARCP & ARCM are great long-term holds.

Don: Thanks for the link. I was not aware that Ste. Michelle was a multi-brand company. I recognize many of the names and have had several. Good to know.

I love seeing people consume products I own as well. Every time I see someone smoking I always say to myself, "MO money!"

I live in MD but go to VA a lot. I will have to pick up some of the wine. It has a good reputation, as do many VA wines.

The Hammer: "This is not the set up for a secular bull market."

What the heck are you talking about? We are currently in the 6th largest secular bull market since 1928. Let me ask, did you miss the boat?

Petrarch: Please. I'd say look at purchases of the S&P on Sep 1, 2000 and Oct 5, 2007 and the ensuing years that it would take those purchases to break even.

That's not to say I don't dollar cost average in index funds, because I do. But for individual stock holdings, I buy stocks with a margin of safety.

Gary, where are you getting your info on the role of the FED, because it is completely inaccurate. The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 granted the FED far more powers that what you described, including:

    1. Conducting the nation's monetary policy by influencing money and credit conditions in the economy in pursuit of full employment and stable prices.

    2. Supervising and regulating banks and other important financial institutions to ensure the safety and soundness of the nation's banking and financial system and to protect the credit rights of consumers.

    3. Maintaining the stability of the financial system and containing systemic risk that may arise in financial markets.

    4. Providing certain financial services to the U.S. government, U.S. financial institutions, and foreign official institutions, and playing a major role in operating and overseeing the nation's payments systems.

I welcome a bear market (and I only invest long). I would love to buy stocks at a discount.

  • Democrats push forward with call for higher minimum wage [View news story]
Mike: I think the problem is that our current primary public education system is woefully outdated and is not providing students with sufficient skills to do anything beyond unskilled minimum wage jobs. The education system needs to be completely revamped, much as it was in the past when it became mandatory for children to attend school through high school (as we moved away from agricultural society to an industrial/business society).

One solution is to mandate that high school be extended two years to gain additional skills training. Students would thus graduate with an Associate's Degree with marketable skills. This is exactly the approach being taken in Chicago and New York with the P-Tech program (Google it). I strongly agree with this approach.

And in the future, the "Intel Inside" logo may take on even more significance and literal meaning as we move not only to wearable devices, but to swallowable and surgically implanted chip devices.

I can't wait to get my "Intel Inside" tat!

  • If Russia Invades Ukraine, Watch Out For These 3 Companies [View article]
Say prayers for what exactly? Are praying for the people of Ukraine or praying that the stock market doesn't overreact?

If the former, praying won't help. Why not pray for Russia not to invade in the first place, then you won't have to wait until Russia invades. Unless of course god doesn't answer your first prayer and then you have to pray again and hope maybe he listens the second time.

If the latter, why pray? If the stock market overreacts to an invasion then use the opportunity to buy more stocks at cheaper prices. Investor fears over the Ukraine issue are far overblown. Ukraine has a capitalization about the same size as Disney. In the global scale of the market, Ukraine is non-issue.

Disclosure: long MDLZ and not worried one iota.
