Consumers and the Economy Are Down and Out

I can't imagine how we though that keeping workers wages low, was going to translate into a vibrant economy. When workers wages weren't enough they had go into debt to buy goods and services. now that isn't available, they are cutting back in their spending. and those in charge and had led the charge against wages are now shocked by this?
