AIG Exec Departures: What a Surprise! [View article]
It must be great to sit on the other side of common sense and say, let GM ,Citi, Aig & all the rest go under. Just think, if GM goes under the Fed. will have 40 years of health & death benefits that the company has been paying with government approved contracts. Wall St. has lost 187,000 jobs at least, so who do they think will hire that office boy, secretary, financial printer? Go further & you'll find the garment industry that manufactures in Viet Nam & China. The executives will almost always get work, even if they have to go from their homes in Grenwich,Conn. to Stamford Conn. to get to the hedge funds up there. Come down here to Florida & drive up U.S.1 from Miami to Palm Beach & see thousands (yes that was thousands) of for sale, for lease, for rent signs. No, not the GM's or AIG's,but the small business who fed the closed companies that used to employ 100-125 workers,or fixed their shoes,or cleaned their suits. IBM does 71% of there business in other than the US There goes another 5,000 high end workers. Maybe you big shots who are ready to let every company fail will start a multi billion dollars business & hire the back office people, waitress staff & every one of those who were not making millions a year, but just trying to keep home & family together! I hold a small amount of AIG common & preferred. I guess it was an oversite but I wasn't asked if the large bonuses should be given. I'll bet though that AIG paid the law firm up to $800.00 an hour to write that contract. You can bet that they got at least A plus in contract law. Does anyone think that the Fed. will hire these same $800. lawyers to break the contract. Also, let me congradulate Senetor Grassley for suggesting suicide as the answer for these executives. In a time when there are so many sick people out there, maybe they will think that suicide is the only answer to there problems. Senetor, watch where your're walking, you might get hit by a falling body!
Could a Markopolos Blog Have Stopped Madoff? [View article]
If Mr. Markopolos stood on the corner of Nassau & Broad Street, nothing would have changed. His fund didn't go after Joe the Plumber,it was done only to the rich, who feel they all have the inside track. It was done with a wink & a nod,but remember, this is only between you & me. Of course Mr. Madorff knew that someone who makes money in the market CAN'T keep their mouth's closed. Even those who didn't withdraw a cent, they made tons on paper & from ole Bernie they would have bought the Brooklyn Bridge & Madorff would have told them that they could start collecting tolls as soon asa they buy the booths!
Dividends: The Secret to Long-Term Returns [View article]
Was it a year ago or more, things have moved so fast, time and dividends are a blurr. All the rocket scientists told us,buy big, buy smart, get the dividends and wait out the downturn. Buy Citi,Bac,Aig,Macy's.Th... giants will keep us afloat until this ecomonic downturn is through. Even Mr. Buffet had to sell because of some of the fertilizer that he bought. I'm no rocket scientist,I bought a Closed End Fund that holds 29% Berkshire Hathaway in it.If I have to do investing after I pay off my margin account, I'll do my own homework--------Thanks for all the advise! Isn't it amazing that President Reagan spent billions & billions to destroy Communism in Russia without ever firing a shot. Now our government is spending Trillions to bring Communism, O.K. Socialism to the United States. Doesn't anybody out there think that if we the investor were offered 10-11% for guaranteed preferred shares that our wonderful country that is the reason Capitalism is the envy of the entire world, except maybe Cuba & North Korea would have paid for mistakes banks & insurance companies made. Of course nobody remembers (especially in Washington) the phrase Redlining that forced these companies to give loans & mortgages to people who should never have been in their own home in the first place? Politicians truly have the shortest memory in our history. Capitalist or Socialist, what would you rather have in America? Bernie
Hao Jin didn't mention if he is a resident of Canada or elseware. We who invest are not doing it because we love smelly black oil or the other fuels that are being touted. We are in it to try to make a profit on our investments. I have three Royalty Trusts from Canada,an ETF from Canada & all of these are in my retirement fund. Before my dividends are paid 15% comes out for Canadian taxes. As I pay no U.S. tax in my retirement account I still do well. But now the treasury minister of Canada wants to add enough tax in four years to bring me up to about 64% tax on these investments. I do hope that he doesn't think we in the U.S.A. will keep investing up North under those conditions. Doing business outside of the U.S.A. is fine as long as it's financially viable. If these outragous taxes go through in the next four years does he really think Americans will put their investment money in Canada? I think not.

Dear short trader Hammas fired 300 rockets into Israel,I spoke to a friend who lives in Tel-Aviv who said they only count the ones that go off. Don't you think that one of those innocents should have said something? Like what are all these strangers useing our homes & mosques & Children as shields to protect themselves? Nobody in the entire world said anything until Israel started fireing back!

I wish when someone tells investors about a stock from outside the USA they mention the fact that if you invest in Canada for instance, before the investor gets their share at least 15% is taken off the top for the country tax. I have 4 Canadian companies in my IRA and they all pay great divedends but I don't pay US taxes on the interest. This means that it still costs me 15% off the top.
