Johnson & Johnson: Throwing In The Towel [View article]
SM--- Your idea's on JNJ were very interesting. Of course you are entitled to them but forgive me if I don't agree with you. In 1886 when the 3 Johnson brothers started their company in New Jersey they had a mission. In the years since, they have grown to 250 companies in 57 countries & sell & do business in almost every country in the world. So many Wall Street guru's wrote them off when their premier brand Tylonol was poisoned on the shelves. But they not only survived this horror but grew bigger & better. I bought my first shares in 1989 & have added in over the years to where it is my largest Pharma holding along with PFE I have never sold a share. In all kinds of economies it has split 3 times since I bought & at 70 years old, I really look forward to that life-saving dividend. If your picture is current then you have a bit of time to learn that a strong dividend is a blessing when we have a Federal government taking away all of the benefits that we grew up expecting as they were promised & in America the GOVERNMENT never lies ! Ms. Maller, please do me a favor, buy just 50 shares of JNJ & just put it away as if you never owned it. When you get to my age, write to my heirs,as I expect I'll not be here & tell them what a wonderful favor I did for you. Bernie 1

JC----The one question that I didn't hear yesterday was, "If a person in these United States has the right to start or join a union, doesn't that person have the right to say no I don't want to join a union."

I was born in N.Y. & lived there for most of my life. I still have a place there,so I guess I'm qualified to say what's others are saying. First my daughter & her 3 kids & husband live on Staten Island. The entire family had to go to the other side of the Island to a friends house who had power. There they were able to shower & eat a meal that wasn't Bar-B-Qued. Water is just a little easier than gas. In fact they all were able to pick up some needed supplies that they couldn't get by there home. The runners will take a slug of water & toss the bottle on the street, I hope they realize they are tossing something worth m ore than gold this week & maybe next if there will be an election day NOREASTER ! Lets not even mention that less than a mile from the starting point, they are still looking for bodies. So Mayor Bloomberg--------you've got 17 billion bucks, but not an ounce of class !
Days before BofA (BAC) shareholders approved the bank's $50B Merrill Lynch purchase, bank execs were told Merrill's losses would hit the combined companies' earnings for years, but chose not to share this info with shareholders. Court documents filed yesterday shed new light on the disconnect, and will likely put more pressure on federal officials to hold key execs accountable for their crisis-era (in)actions. [View news story]
As a long term holder of BAC would someone please remind me. I realize I should write every thing down because the grey cells aren't as sharp as they used to be. Didn't our economic leaders in Washington push BAC to the wall with the threat that if they wanted bail-out monies, they would first have to buy Merrill & Countrywide? I don't know of any other promises of help,or threats but I sure wish I had been a fly on the wall with a recorder during those terrible days.

deer--- getting a gun permit in New York was never easy. I had many business friends who, before computer transfers carried a lot of cash & could not get a permit. So what it comes to is, only the bad people will have the weapons & we will still be shot & maimed & the politicians will tell us that we tried. In my town in Florida a few years ago, the local post office posted a sign at the entrance, it said, "Customers are not to enter this office with a concealed weapon, only postal employees can carry such a gun" !

That's the second time you asked where was Jon Corzine. If I heard right,he was the head of YES WE CAN for the Obama re-election team. I think he represents the good 1 %. Oh, you didn't hear? The good 1% are the ones who give to Obama. Of course the bad 1% are the Romney people. Bernie 1

Call me an optimist, but if we have enough coal to last at least a hundred years,& it's common knowledge that we do have more oil than the Saudi's & others together. If Washington (AKA President Obama) allows big oil to drill & frack for the next number of years, & allow big coal to find & bring up clean coal, & then find 3 companies with enough sense & guts to build REFINERIES which is the reason the Northeast & the West Coast can't get enough gas. Washington, if they don't spend the taxes generated on other pet projects, all the income will stay in the USA & not in the Rolls Royce dealerships in the Middle East. Let Asia pay for Arab oil & let the USA become energy independent ! This extra income will pay for electric energy development & all the other pet projects that look good on paper, but only end up in Chapter 11 or 13 . Electric cars are for now a nice toy, but fossil fuels is the most needed energy for now.

JSG----Albany will get the $ where they have always gotten it. New York is the second highest tax state in the country, & as a retired business person who spent 6 1/2 decades living & working in N.Y. Albany will squeeze as much as they can from Downstate & then add just one more tax so the liberal left from downstate can argue this last needless tax & the Republican Upstaters will (as they always do) shrug & say, OK those guy's from the boroughs really understand how to bargain. So lets' just drop that last tax that we added on. Things are a lot slower in Florida, but I don't pay State tax & the last time I looked retail tax was about 6 1/4 %.

If the Japanese still didn't have the same mentality that they had in 1931, & the Chinese didn't have the Mao mentality that said that it all belongs to us, & we can wait a 100 years to get it. When rational countries with both having easy access to the islands would split these uninhabited islands up with one doing drilling & one doing refining or shipping. Just ask me & I'd settle all of the world's problems in just one E-Mail ! Regards Bernie 1
Why General Electric's Buyback Is A Raw Deal For Shareholders [View article]
Hi Steven, This was a very complete argument on why we the shareholder should get that special dividend. Those of us that are long GE & accepted the reduction in dividend income when the world turned upside down have been very patient. The board gets compensation for the meetings that they attend. If they don't have an apartment in Fairfield, Conn. They are flown to the meeting,if they are closer (New York City etc.) they are driven by limo. They certainly aren't fed from the take out window of McDonalds either. As I've seen since Mr.. Immelt took over, we the investor is only secondary to what he perceives as growth for the company. To me he is using the same type of math that his real boss Mr.. Obama uses. When I first homesteaded in Florida I was asked if I wanted a party affiliation & to honor my dad & granddad, who were Roosevelt democrats I registered democrat. In so doing I get the literature & all the B.S. in the mail, but worse than that are the phone calls asking me for my time & money to help further Mr.. O's work. I voted for O.for change,& the only change I got was financial distress, health issues that I now cannot afford to pursue because of the cost of Medicare & deductions. Immelt uses the same math as Obama, Social Security (which pays for Medicare) was frozen for 2 years & in the third we got a Cost of living increase. Now they have announced in 2013 we will only get about 1.4% because of the LARGE increase that we got last time around, with no mention of the frozen S.S. in the prior years. Mr.. Immelt is so impressed with Mr.. O. that he is & will extend that to the running of G.E.Where is JACK WELCH when we the investor really needs a leader for G.E. Sorry this rant became political, but I can't say Immelt or now G.E. without including Washington ! Bernie 1

Hi deer, At last an answer for you. To show that Mr.. Corzine doesn't just lose other people's money,he just sold the (best views of downtown Manhattan) pent house apartment he owned in Hoboken N.J. for about a 3 million dollar bath. I didn't get a post card, but I read that he was buying an estate or something (does it matter) in the south of France. Who knows, maybe this is his chance to become the economics minister. Bernie 1

Gee Rich, maybe you should have had CNBC while you were bemoaning 27,000 jobs or 8 % of the world-wide HP workforce. She will take that money from overbloated sections of the company & make other divisions more profitable. If only California had the sense to bring this bright, intelligent manager in as Governor they would come out of there troubles a hell of a lot faster. As in government or business there is no room for sentiment but strong logical decisions. Japan had a policy of jobs for life,& where are they? They are still in a financial nightmare that has lasted for way to many years!

So Mr.. Obama wants an extra 1.6 Trillion in tax revenue. Being that taxing the very rich, will only bring in a fraction of that money. I guess it's really to be (President Reagan would have loved this) a true trickle down ,no not economy, but TAX base. It will be up to those who voted for Obama's tax plan will now have to chip in. Of course those that are unable or unwilling to get out of bed & find all of these great jobs that have been promised are excused. But I'm afraid they will still have to wait until month end to get there money. This is a great country, but we just can't deliver your money daily !

TA----God bless your youth. As I've written to you before, when the price of goods go up,your lease comes due for an increase, you have the ability to work another few hours, or even get another part time job. There are those of us who because of health or age don't have that privilege. We who have managed to live longer than 65 years can't do much to improve there lot. One candidate say's that he will make my Social Security (which I paid into my entire working life) safe for all time. And yet my deductible has done nothing but go up for the last 4 years, even when Congress froze it for 2 years. He didn't say that among the poor uninsured & his newly made undocumented citizens who came here illegally, legal & paid & still in many cases don't contribute to S.S. & Medicare, comes from my benefits. The other side say's that I'm safe,(I doubt that very much) because they won't start the vouchers for those over 55. Well I have a beautiful daughter of 48 who works 2 jobs & her husband in his new business is working 14 hour days. 2 of her children are in college & the 3rd. one graduates high school next year. Where is the money to come from?Only if they run for Congress or President will there health insurance & more benefits be guaranteed. I still say, you do write a good article. But when those monthly, quarterly & semi annual dividends come in, I'm allowed to punish Washington by living another day !

Our government finds it so easy to spend trillions on new mortgages that will not get repaid. If they couldn't pay at 6 1/2 % why do they think that giving them a 4% loan will get the debt off of Fannie & Freddie. Also a large part of these trillions go to countries who not only hate us, they party like it's pay day when we have an Arizona,Oklahoma City, Atlanta, World Trade Center. Can you just imagine a government without (until this week) one person with business experience ? Teachers running the country on theory not reality. My 14 year old grangdaughter could have told the brains in Washington, that they shouldn't have sold their holdings of GM on it's IPO day because the insiders can't sell for 60 days.
