Everyone should consider the demise of Fairpoint Communications (FRP} as an example of chasing divs. They recently tanked, going from 20 to nothing. A must read!

  • Canadian Energy Trusts: The Best Long Term Income and Dollar Hedge? (Part 2) [View article]
In reading your articles, I find continued optimism, with little background of the ongoing chemistry/events of of the market.

You avoid commenting on the impact at the end of 2010 [21 months from now]. These investments may surprise in the "interim" by changing to corporate structure, thereby reducing divs etc.
Also not discussed[even if the trusts do not convert], is the impact of US investors paying tax in th30%+ range on the divs.
Following the follwoing Board will give insights as to the furture of the CANROYS
    www.investorvillage.co...

For me, I'm out of Canroys for good , untill I see the results of 2011

There are numerous othe US trust opportunites that good buys right now-BPT, CRT, NRT, PBT etc. Also BP looks good.

  • Electric Utilities: Now a Screaming Buy? [View article]
    Robert,
You are NOT amazing. You say "Screaming Buy", and the "Not talking about buy and hold".
Sounds like your one [of many ] who confused the investing public, and took them down with your advice.
Your resume is long, but maybe an anchor for you.
    IE
"Not talking about a buy and hold here. Just as this bear market rally is pooping the financials as they may finally be oversold, a let up on the cap and trade will rebound the utilities. The utilities got sold off very hard and will see a rise. I do not play buy-and-get-hit-by-a-t...

We get a decent bear market rally here and three sectors will perform the best inside this rally - banks, tech and utilities".

  • Electric Utilities: Now a Screaming Buy? [View article]
    Robert,
A very short term incomplete naive look.
The trend is demand/growth dropping, revenues as well, CAPEX cuts, Exec Bonuses, and salaries flat. Divs cut.
Doesn't bode well for "Screaming Buys"
Are we on the same planet???

  • Dividend-Paying Utilities for a Well-Rounded Portfolio [View article]
Divs are nice, but stable asset values are equally important.
Sinc Jan 09, DUK, ED,GXP, NI, PGN,AEP,SO,and more-are all down 15-30%. Already , as mentioned CEG,GXP,AEE have cut divs. Lower, with more to come. Cunsumer demand, and unpayed bills, will cause more to happen. Beware of Utilities now---Watch the earnings reports. Cap and Trade is a killer! In Bonds,a nd CD's

I've had many of the stocks mentioned over time. I sold in 10/08, and see an additional 30-50% loss since.
Even in the last 3-4 weeks the best Utilities are down 15-20%. Measly divs do help. I'm in bonds , cds, and cash

CLIFF, my advice to you is stick with accounting, your financial logic is wanting!
