  • Master Limited Partnership ETFs Vs. ETNs, Which Is Better? [View article]
" I reinvested all proceeds to AMLP. A greater than 6% yield, all ROC treatment last year, and capital gain potential is adequate for me."

Doesn't the ROC reduce basis, and ordinary income tax is paid on sale? Not much difference from an MLP sale??

  • BP Prudhoe Bay Royalty Trust: What Is BPT's Fair Value? [View article]
We are facing a Oil Glut, going forward!
Total Return of BPT, is adjusted by "ordinary" income tax on Yearly Income, and total Recapture of yearly Depreciation at sale! The High Div can be illusory.
A good Dividend Growth Stock, or, Muni Bond , or Muni Fund, can be similar in return, and result in less sleep deprivation.

  • BP Prudhoe Bay Royalty Trust: What Is BPT's Fair Value? [View article]
QUESTION: Should I hold BPT in a taxable acct, and sell it later, would I have to pay ordinary income on ROC, depreciation, and otherwise, Long term gain rate on gain from purchase price, such as I do, when I sell an MLP?
What is the situation on sale, if held in an IRA?
Would like to know this before I buy?

  • Brad Thomas Positions For 2014: Attractive Opportunities Present Themselves In REITs [View article]
    Another "other side"

    REITs' value called into question
The morphing of equity REITs from a niche to a widely accepted and favored asset class has diminished the likelihood of outsized performance going forward, writes Morningstar's Samuel Lee. For decades, REIT yields averaged in the area of 7%, but a "regime shift" about 10 years ago has settled them down closer to 4%.
Further, another benefit of REITs - their lack of correlation with the broader market - has disappeared, says Lee, with their average market beta of 0.5 moving to more than one in the early 2000s, and staying there ever since.
"Anyone who buys REITs on historical risk/return characteristics without considering the fundamental drivers of return and potential changes to market structure is being reckless. A deeper look strongly suggests that REITs' diversification powers are down and so are their expected returns."
Lee has two suggestions for those looking for an inflation hedge: Cash - the Fed typically raises short-term rates inline with increases in inflation - and conventional equities.

  • 2014: The Case For 'Reverse Rotation' Into Bond CEFs [View article]
    I'm 80. Your on a good track.
Good paying bonds I bought years ago, are maturing , and new ones pay very little.
I'm taking the proceeds, and buying equitys w/ good growth, and good Divs with good CAG. Would have been better off if I started earlier--"too soon old, too late smart---"
