The cost of complying with a federal law to use corn ethanol in fuel has skyrocketed. The problem is that refiners are hitting the "blend wall," whereby car makers recommend that ethanol shouldn't comprise more than 10% of gasoline. That could conflict with proposed increased EPA quotas for ethanol next year, which has caused the price of ethanol credits to jump to over $1 from just a few cents last year. Eventually, refiners will pass the costs onto consumers, says Valero Energy (VLO). [View news story]
What does this mean to: Cost of gas? VLO earnings? VLO equity price?
RK, Thanks for your comments--not that I like them!!! What would you say about the the tax on sale of other investments in an IRA, like Royalty Trusts, CEFS, EEQ, KMR--all of which have reductions in basis, due to distributions?
Hi RK, Following your comment, I offer the following, that may be some help to others. I offer my experience to those , who may be able to utiize such. My stategy to eliminate MLPS from my IRA, mentioned earlier, has been to Transfer[not sell] them to my Taxable acct. I did so in 2012, and now have a K-1 that shows the basis is increased[reset] to the value at transfer date. I will pay ordinary income tax in 2013, and this amount will be a portion of My RMD. so needing to pay anyway, is not a problem, but a convienient way to avoid any perceived future tax on sale in an IRA. I did this through Schawb, and recently at Fidelity. Some have said, this is in fact a sale in the IRA, and a new buy in the Taxable acct. The MLP contact says it's a "transfer", and w/o any fees.
I did have to contact the MLP to get the K-1 corrected.

I'm at a loss to understand this article's thesis. It would seem that it would set me up for a loss for the last 5 yrs, not beating inflation, and getting taxed on divs!

Wouldn't one be covered by paying Ord Income on the whole transfer, as stated?
I have done this many times with div paying stocks, w/o any issue.
I note your coment of 17 Feb above:
" Hi GD,
Certainly, there is a reset to FMV and any previous tax basis is reset.
If the MLPs K-1 doesn't so indicate, you will need to contact them.
RK "
