  • 25 Options Strategies for a Bullish or Flat Market  [View article]
It would have been except that the last 3 mos, since volatility has fallen, they've pretty much tracked their indices. I actually did this & it worked fairly well for awhile.

Wow! That 1929 decline was STRAIGHT down!!! I've never seen it so well represented graphically.
    Thanks

  • Immovable Forces: Market Areas That Will Resist Change [View article]
I don't find assigning blame too productive a pursuit unless it might suggest solutions, as you've done. Whether one favors increased regulation or not (I personally do), increased transparency would help address all 3 items above, as you suggest.
    Thank you.

  • Four Reasons Why Stock Screeners Won’t Work For Next Few Years [View article]
My formerly effective screens for long but especially for short stocks have had a rough time of it in recent months. It seems as if they may just be starting to regain some performance advantage again over the last few weeks.

  • Reverse Convertibles and 'EIPs' – Here’s The Point [View article]
My girlfriend had a large part of her retirement portfolio with positive returns in an annuity during the meltdown due to good & timely advice from her trusted adviser. I appreciate your explanation of these products and am impressed with your recommendations for adequate regulation and transparency.
    Thank you.

  • FAS and FAZ: A Short-Seller's Dream? [View article]
I have shorted these as intermediate term hedges. Nothing is riskless & the risk here is that as volatility falls this trend will reverse, i.e., both fas & faz may outperform their respective indices. I've already noticed that happen to some extent as vix falls. I have seen similar problems shorting the options. As always a VERY sophisticated trader (not me) can continue to use these to his/her advantage, but the rest of us need to stay on our toes.

  • Sequenom's Bombshell [View article]
I'm a small short-term investor. I was lucky enough to be short 200 shares at 14.1 for 3 days based on:
1 Schwab ranked F (a new trial criterion for me since my usual ones for shorts haven't been working lately)
    2 very bad chart
    3 persistent declining revenues.
    I closed 100 at 3.34 this morning & (over-optimistically?) have a 3.07 limit order in for the other 100.
My emotions keep telling me I'm a brilliant investor but my brain (& lots of my other trades) keeps telling me my brilliance is largely luck!

  • BoJ Cuts Rates: Japan Braces for Deflation [View article]
I read somewhere that Japan has one of the highest personal savings rates in the developed world, unlike us here in the U.S. Is the debt to GDP ratio government debt? Isn't it good to have had such a low rate to service it for so long?

  • Short Selling Levels Down. Is This a Surprise? [View article]
The ironic (&, to me, edifying) thing is that the investment banks were making money hand-over-fist as intermediaries for hedge fund naked shorting, then themselves became victims of the same phenomenon.
For those of us who aren't billionaires the market needs to be more transparent, simpler & better regulated.

  • Never Enough Lessons on Forward P/E [View article]
P/E's in general have little predictive value. Both P/S is overall better, tho your cyclicality argument would apply here, too..., and also changes in earnings estimates are better. These statements are data-supported.
Thank you for your article--I found it very informative.
    (Please excuse my syntax).

  • A-Power Energy Announces Huge Contract, Stock Down 11% [View article]
The management effectives numbers & debt figures look good. I worry, though, that they've sold an inordinate amount of new stock in recent months. P/B & P/S are a little above industry--a little harder to massage than earnings. High insider ownership & a fired CFO...I worry.
    I guess that's what makes markets!!! :-)
