Also true however its a hassle to convert part of one's portfolio to Canadian dollars. I have a bunch of Canadian companies in my Wife's IRA which I do no trade options in so I just rolled it over to Scottrade - end of problem. I guess what pissed me off about IBL is that when I phoned them they stated that if other brokerages didn't withhold Canadian tax it was because they were getting the pink-sheet versions of the stocks - Please!

    Jeff,
I dont think that is correct. If your income is less than $1000 in an IRA it is free.

    Jeff,
That's one big assumption that the FTC will clear HLF. My opinion is that they will not rule HLF as a pure pyramid scheme (as they have no guts) but will slap their wrist in some way. HLF is not going to sue anyone because, as I said the FTC will make some ambivalent decision that opening their books would be worse.

I have not heard a reasonable answer to the question "if Ackman is making statements that are libelous why hasn't Herbalife not sued them?" The implication is that they are afraid to since they would have to open their books for all to see and would likely not be able to fend off the pyramid scheme accusation any longer.

The tubo tax cost is insignificant and unless you only make a dozen or so trades a year you will need some kind of tax program. Of course there is always the $500-600 dollar CPA cost if you want to save the $50 for turbo tax.

For information regarding CEFs give this link a look:

Uncle Pie, I am not sure what your hard-on is for this company, you are always the first comment on all of their recent post to complain about the difference DD using the term dividend instead of distributions. OK, we get it, there is a difference and yes there is a K-1. DD is a subscriptions service and these post give us freebies. I have tracked their recommendations given to us here on SA since 1/6/14 and the portfolio has a 9.3% capital gains - I was too lazy to track the dividends but I am sure they were significant.
The author disclosure says he has no position but may initiate one within 72 hours so really I don't understand your complaint(s).

This is true but I figure that I will have to file an extension every year which is easy even with turbo tax. I guess one has to decide if the income from MLPs are worth the hassle, I am retired so I have the time to mess with it.

Regarding dividends and distributions from Canadian companies, the US and Canada have a tax treaty so IRAs and the like are not subject to Canadian withholding taxes however many brokerages to not want to be bothered and take out the withholding anyway. I found this true of Interactive Brokers and they refused to deal with it, even implied that this is SOP, its not so if you have Canadian dividends you need to find out how your brokerage is handling them.

K-1 tax forms are a nuisance however Turbo Tax makes it easy and a lot cheaper than a CPA. In IRAs and 401Ks I think one has to have distributions of over $1000 before there is a tax consequence but if that is a concern just check the IRS website or call them.

Kgerickson outlines how I would approach having this cash on-hand. Dividends are not the only source of income from stocks. Selling puts gives an investor instant cash and a chance to pick-up some of your favorites at a bargain price.

  • Understanding The Excitement That Surrounds Gilead [View article]
Just read an article that states that most if not all of the Healthcare Companies involved in Medicaid are hurting due to drug cost. Sovaldi alone cost Welcare Health Plan $0.30 a share. I think many investors are thinking that the Government might pressure GILD to reduce the price or threaten not to fully cover it with Medicare and Medicaid.
Yes, the argument can be made that the cost of Sovaldi is cheap compared to the long term care of Hep-C patients but Healthcare Companies are getting creamed due to not meeting EPS and revenue so they may be panicking over the short term outlook.
