  • A Crude 10 Year Perspective: The DJIA, Oil and Gold [View article]
    Fitz,
I guess we will have to agree to disagree on the history of the collapse of gold prices in the late 70s. As I recall the event, late 1978 or 1979 all the gold and silver-bug newsletters were talking about the price of gold's imminent explosion to the upside after the first of the year when US citizens could once again legally hold gold. Gold was over 800 and ounce and had been moving up rapidly. New Years came and went, American citizens had no interest in buying gold and overnight gold fell out of bed. The drop was precipitous not the ups and down that are usually associated with gold's relationship to other commodities or currency fluctuations.
It's been a long while back so maybe my memory has failed me.

    Fitz,
I agree with most of what Einhorn has to say except his statement that gold collapsed because of Volker's austerity program. Volker's management of interest rates might have been the "camel that...." but the diving force of gold's collapse in the late 70s (IMHO) was the fact that the dramatic rise in gold prices was largely predicated on the fact that US citizens were going to be allowed once again to own gold. When the law came into being Americans were disinterested in gold and there was a selling panic amongst those who had gold. The situation is totally different now and gold seems to be in lock-step with the S&P with a few exceptions.

That's all well and good but who is listening? It looks to me like big oil has put more money in the campaign pockets of Congress than gas companies thus have more access to them and how the political winds blow. Individuals like you and me (and Boone) can write letters , send emails till the cows come home and nothing will happen unless the rascals are swamped with letters from their constituents demanding natural gas be used at least to satisfy Piken's plan. We have the leadership we deserve as I would venture to say most of the public is too lazy to get away from the TV and write or email plus if they did they haven't a clue as to what the problem is or how to solve it. Oil will go higher, no doubt in my mind but gold?, not so sure about that.

  • Book Review: Robert Hefner's 'The Grand Energy Transition' [View article]
oh yeah, I forgot-Charley says that there are just too many problems with getting wind energy from the source across the grid to the user. Solar is a problem in that it cost a lot of energy to build solar, battery storage in poor and some other problems that I am not stating very well. His point is that even if Obama gets solar and wind energy productions double (I think that was a stated goal) it would still be a very small fraction of the U.S. energy needs.
    Thanks for the review Fitz.

  • Book Review: Robert Hefner's 'The Grand Energy Transition' [View article]
Charley Maxwell is an energy analyst that has won about every peer review and award possible.
Fitz, I have to say Charley agrees with Alex, Hydrogen as a cheap fuel is a dream that won't happen soon.
Charlie agrees that NG should be mandated for all Federal Vehicles this year, State vehicles next year and infrastructure for Trucks and autos in no less that three years. He also says it makes sense to use NG for electricity production but in the end, nuclear is the only way to produce electricity cheap and with a minimum of pollution, it's being done around the world and the U.S, is way behind the curve. He also says that one of the things we need to do now to get some immediate relief is energy conservation.
Politics being what they are Charley thinks it's unlikely any of these things will happen before oil prices go up and he realizes that there is a lot of public resistance to nuclear but feels it's unfounded and time and money is slipping through our fingers every day we put it off.
I am recounting the interview with Mr. Maxwell as best as I remember but at 71 my memory aint what it used ta be!

Someone or some entity with a lot of political clout does not want to see NG powered vehicles in the U.S. Jimmy Rogers has been talking about it as well as many other people who have a bully pulpit have wrote and talked about NG benefits but it gets no political traction, has Obama mentioned NG vehicles in any of his speeches?

  • Americans Forget High Oil Prices Too Quickly [View article]
Socialism cannot compete thinks we need to "Just get the government outta the way!!!" If you look at the financial industry today you have a good example of "the government getting out of the way". If there is going to be an infrastructure hand-out why not do something that will move us away from oil and all geopolitical chaos, not to mention blood and dollars it causes.
Oil was subsidized in the early days when the government built roads. Many states and cities subsidized oil to get their business. Building infrastructure or making it inviting for the gas industry to build the infrastructure for gas autos is a great idea.

It is discouraging is that a nim-rod like Palin could even become a mayor much less a V.P. candidate for the U.S. who is defended by all you knee-jerk Conservatives. If the Democrats had chosen Britney Spears as V.P. Candidate is would have been about the same as Palin on the Republican ticket except Britney probably has more money.
