  • Why Union Pacific Stock Is A Great Investment Opportunity [View article]
The CEO in a presentation recently has stated they can move around 200K carloads a week under current infrastructure.
If they see the need they can increase capacity by running longer trains, adding new siding & double tracking lines like they are doing with the Sunset Corridor now.

  • Why It's Hard To Buy The Hershey Company [View article]
HSY always seems to be overpriced. In the 1927 movie Wings, before going flying, a young Gary Cooper reaches for a Hershey bar. I want to own things with that kind of staying power.

Full disclosure: Gary Cooper's plane crashes in the next scene and his is killed.

  • Union Pacific Corporation - Steady As She Goes, Buy On Dips [View article]
UNP is my largest holding and I am very very long UNP, NSC, CSX,CNI & CP.
I do have one thing I'd like to point out in UP's case. Through week 29 Petroleum products moved on the UP are actually down 11%. The weekly carload information is available on the UP website at 1pm CST each Monday, CSX & NSC's are available at 11AM CST.

So we have seen 8% growth in traffic this year, with Petroleum being down 11%.
In the energy space the company has been showing strong gains in frac sand & chemicals.

Look for grains & intermodal to remain strong. Everything else should slowly improve with the economy.

All I've been hearing in my head the last 15 minutes is Roscoe P. Coletrain saying "good news, good news" over and over again.

  • CSX Q2 sales hit record, reaffirms 2014 outlook, increases spending plan [View news story]
The biggest driver of growth has been intermodal. This is partially because of a strengthening economy, the big reason being trucking companies are working with the railroads and paying them to move their cargo the long haul portion of it.

If you live near a main rail corridor watch a container train go by. More than likely this train is double stacked, and around 100 cars long. It is much cheaper for a company like JB Hunt to let one of the big railroads move those 200 loads, than to pay 200 drivers with semi's that need fuel and maintenance.

To be fair, we are seeing improvement in almost every freight category, but to suggest 6% GDP growth because of these numbers is ridiculous.

  • My Income Portfolio Quarterly Update (Q2 2014) [View article]
Keep it up and stick with your plan. You look to be about my age, we have a long time to go to retirement. No reason to take unneeded risks when we have learned the power of dividend investing early on.

  • Expect Your Philip Morris Dividend To Grow 8-10% This September [View article]
It will be between $.98 & $1.00. The company still expects currency neutral earnings of 6-8 %, which is what they base their dividend payment off of.
The company has stated they expect their dividend payments & share repurchases to be more in line with free cash flow in the future, which is roughly $9 billion currently.
I expect a couple years of light dividend increases, to get the numbers back in line with their free cash flow. Afterwards, I expect dividend growth of around 8%.

In a recent presentation, which you can find a link to on the companies site, they have expressed a desire to increase the dividend faster than EPS growth over the next few years. HON has one of the lower payout ratios of the big cap industrial companies.

Any possibility the market has adjusted its normalized p/e ratio of the railroads? Specifically, Berkshire's purchase of BNSF. One could also look at the tremendous improvement in the o.r over the past decade, thereby possibly implying a higher valuation?
UNP is my largest holding and I enjoy watching my investment on the occasional Saturday afternoon in the country.

Just some thoughts to ponder on why its valuation may be higher then the historical norm.

I enjoy your articles, keep up the good work.

  • Our Retirement Income Business Plan - The Legacy Addition [View article]
Excellent article. One question, when you were in your accumulation phase, did you automatically reinvest dividends, or let the cash accumulate in your account and then make a purchase?

Thank you and keep up the great work.
