Once again Coke did what punching a time clock generally doesn't do..yearly 9% pay raises.

    Now that's a raise.
I've just started building a position over the past couple months and look forward to being a partner in this business for a long time.

  • General Mills, Inc. declares $0.41 dividend [View news story]
This is the number one stock I hope Berkshire doesn't buy.

I've held it for years and while it never seems to do much on a day to day basis, I look back in awe at its slow steady march higher and the incredible growth through compounding dividends.

  • What Lies Ahead For Kraft? [View article]
Kraft will be fine long term. It does what it's supposed to do, spit off gobs of cash and not move too violently.
I'm only 32 but I learned dividend investing early and know I don't have to invest in speculative stocks hoping to win big.

Long such core stocks as KRFT, GIS, JNJ, UNP, MMM and others.

  • Why Now May Be The Last Chance For Low General Mills Share Prices [View article]
General Mills is my #1 boring stock. It barely moves, but has somehow made me a ton of money. Dividend reinvestment and minimal volatility make it a solid anchor.

  • Examining Dividend Aristocrats: AT&T Approaching Value [View article]
Good luck in your investments. I remember how excited I was when I crossed the $100 a year in dividends threshold. Now, 6 years later...wow, compounding is really a marvel.

When I started building my dividend growth portfolio I used DRIP. Now, I only drip my IRA, letting my taxable dividends accumulate until I spot a good opportunity.

  • Why It's Hard To Buy The Hershey Company [View article]
HSY always seems to be overpriced. In the 1927 movie Wings, before going flying, a young Gary Cooper reaches for a Hershey bar. I want to own things with that kind of staying power.

Full disclosure: Gary Cooper's plane crashes in the next scene and his is killed.

  • Union Pacific Corporation - Falling Crude Prices Might Present An Opportunity [View article]
Through week 48, "Petroleum Products" have only accounted for 3% of Union Pacific's carloads. They just don't haul much of the stuff.

True, they haul other things used in the process of extracting oil & gas, but the lower diesel fuel price and boost to the consumer from lower gasoline prices will outweigh any slowdown in oil production.

Heavy commodities will still be moved by train, truck isn't going to replace that. Intermodal will continue to grow as trucking companies can't find help and trains will continue to be way more efficient for moving goods long haul. Watch a 100 car double stacked container train go by, those are 200 less semis that need to be bought, maintained, taxed and manned.

  • Railroads Set To Deliver Record Third-Quarter Profits Amid Customer Complaints [View article]
Rails will continue to do well. We as a country will continue to use more stuff and eat more food. Rail owns the entire supply chain, from raw goods to finished ones.
While oil has been a boon, for BNSF in particular, look at the carloads of everything else..the rails move EVERYTHING.
The next decade will see continued investments by these companies that will allow for the better movement of freight, thereby increasing cashflows allowing for higer dividends and buybacks.

I'm overweight rails, but as you can tell I see a bright future for them. I don't see transporter technology or drones delivering grain/lumber/steel/aut... and on and on anytime soon.

  • Is Union Pacific Going To Go Off The Rails With The Global Economy Waning? [View article]
I don't know why everyone says UP gets a large portion of its revenue from hauling oil, or that the oil boom has helped the UP tremendously. If one were to actually look at the weekly carloads info, which is available on up.com, one would see "petroleum products" accounts for roughly 3% of their revenue.
Yes, UP does haul pipe & fracking sand, both of which are used in drilling and both of those shipments are up strongly.

Also, UP owns 26% of Ferromex and operates at 6 gateways into Mexico. Roughly 10% of the UP's volume is related to Mexican trade( ports for containers and auto assembly plants).

UP also operates at several West coast ports in the U.S.

This information is all available on their website but it seems as if few people actually read it.

Disclosure: I am very long UNP in multiple accounts.

  • Union Pacific Corporation - Steady As She Goes, Buy On Dips [View article]
UNP is my largest holding and I am very very long UNP, NSC, CSX,CNI & CP.
I do have one thing I'd like to point out in UP's case. Through week 29 Petroleum products moved on the UP are actually down 11%. The weekly carload information is available on the UP website at 1pm CST each Monday, CSX & NSC's are available at 11AM CST.

So we have seen 8% growth in traffic this year, with Petroleum being down 11%.
In the energy space the company has been showing strong gains in frac sand & chemicals.

Look for grains & intermodal to remain strong. Everything else should slowly improve with the economy.
