  • More on Seadrill (SDRL): Q4 beats on its top line as net earnings swung to a profit on stronger revenue and the offshore-drilling contractor benefited from a change in an unrealized gain on marketable securities. Operating profit for floaters, the company's largest segment, dropped 7.3%, while the jack-up rigs business reported a 44% rise. Operating expenses meanwhile, climbed 24% to $774M. Shares +0.6% AH. [View news story]
Looks like I picked a winner. Looking to increase my holdings on a pullback.

Why the big increase in operating expenses?

  • Why I Sold My Verizon Stock (And Why I'm Not Looking Back) [View article]
As I mentioned I would do a while back. I sold half of my meager Verizon holdings and used it to purchase Vodophone. In the long run, I came out ahead. I own more units of VOD than of VZ and earn over $100.00 interest more. And I still own a position in VZ.

  • AT&T Vs. Verizon: Which Is The Better Long-Term Investment? [View article]
I bought 1000 shares of Verizon for my IRA early in 2010, just before a pullback (go figure). It took 8 months to recover. My broker mentioned that I should swap out Verizon for Vodafone. I did some interest calculations on my own.
VZ sells for 1.56 X's VOD. Say sell 1000 shares of VZ and buy 1500 shares of VOD . 1000 X $2.06 = $2060. 1500 X $1.48 = $2220. That's $160. 00 more interest in an IRA that could be reinvested for even further growth.

  • BP Prudhoe Bay Royalty Trust (BPT +14.8%) is bouncing big after a disastrous three days since WSJ ran a cautious article on the group, which noted that royalty trusts trade at a premium to the present value of their cash available for distribution. Someone must be seeing blood in the Bay, now finding the risk/reward characteristics of this long-term cash machine more attractive. [View news story]
This stinks of market manipulation! BPT is mostly small investors in for the long haul for the large interest rate it pays. It takes a large firm to start a drop like this. I'm curious to find out who pulled the trigger to start this drop. Who stood to gain?

I'd like to see it back up to the levels it was at just before cummings dropped its bomb.

  • General Electric: Now Is Not The Time To Buy [View article]
I remember when "Jeff I" said that the "dividend was safe" just a few days before he and his crew of good old boys gave the dividend the ax. That established his reputation as a LIAR.
G.E. needs a new leader. I have not, nor will I ever vote to keep "jeffe" in office.

  • BP Prudhoe Bay Royalty Trust: This Trust Is Worth 50% Of Today's Price [View article]
Sooooo... You don't mind if I hang onto The stock and enjoy the great dividends until it drops near my original purchase price?

According to your math, The stock should be viable for a few more years. I don't have to wait till 2024 to sell it.

  • General Electric, A Flat Stock Without New Consumer Products [View article]
I am long on GE. Have been for over 30 years. I Invested about 10% of my paychecks into GE's Savings and security program (a form of 401)and put it into GE stock. I sold most of it at a loss when GE slashed the dividend and plummeted to $6.00 a share.

GE buys companies to support their ongoing endeavors or to gain patents and a foothold into new endeavors. This is nothing new. They have been doing this for years. In the 70's They bought a small company that gave them patents and the technology to produce a cat scan that made them a leader in that field for years. And they keep doing this to maintain that leadership.

  • Why General Electric's Buyback Is A Raw Deal For Shareholders [View article]
I agree that GE has not fared well under Jeff Immelt's leadership. I have been a GE stockholder since the late 70's and enjoyed the stock growth provided by the previous leadership.(at least two doubles and a triple) The shift into financials nearly destroyed the company in the crash of '08/'09. Maybe a new leader is called for? I look foreword to validation of Tastrona's claims of theft by United Health.

I've been tracking PBI for the last year. It's down $6.59 in the last 11 months. could the large debt (51.9%) be the cause of this death spiral?
