Really surprised the stock is up slightly in the AH with that miss. The Y/Y comps were OK but the Q/Q weren't and the stock has had a huge run already, guess the stock has more room to run with the shorts covering.
Apple $395: Time To Give Up And Abandon Ship? [View article]
I think Cook will announce a hefty dividend increase but those wishing for that announcement to boost the share price, be careful of what you wish for.
Changing the profile of Apple from a growth stock to a dividend/income stock may mean that it never approaches the $500 level again where many bought the stock. Apple needs another hit like the iPhone not a fat 4% dividend.

I thought it was unusual that 3 firms chose to downgrade the stock from buy to hold on the same day with no news.
Another 52 week low today and trading below $70 as I write this, maybe the catalyst to drive the stock price up will be a significant asset sale or the earnings report and under $70 may be the time to nibble on the stock but it has been a woeful stock for shareholders.

3 downgrades today on APA, MS, Oppenheimer and JP Morgan. Set a new 52 week low this morning. I would stay away. I said it would be in the 60's several weeks ago and we are almost there.

Two positive sell side notes as well today. CS talking about margin improvements from infrastructure investments and Pac Crest citing strong Kindle Fire sales.
Several U.S. retailers have seen a pickup in Z10 returns, says Detwiler Fenton in a note that could be pressuring BlackBerry (BBRY -5.2%). Detwiler, which also issued a downbeat note on Z10 demand last month, adds the pace of returns in some cases is exceeding the pace of sales, and that users are complaining about the Z10's UI, Maps app, and app availability. Separately, Amazon has cut its subsidized Z10 price to $99. (AT&T launch) [View news story]
The bulls are in trouble when a company with a research dept. of 6 people can cause BBRY to fall by a buck.
The real reason is it was ripe for selling having made no headway after the Z10 launch and earnings, even a strong market couldn't turn the price up.
Apple Has Become The Most Underrated Stock [View article]
No question that the stock is cheap but that chart is broken, I think we break $420 before the earnings on 4/23.
There are however quite a few rabbits that Cook can pull out of his bag of tricks to get the stock moving higher on 4/23, I hope he doesn't dissappoint.
"After our meeting with a tech-supply chain company, we walked away with the view that Apple will release the iPhone 5S in at least two screen sizes this summer and possibly three," says Topeka's Brian White. "We believe Apple is coming around to the fact that one size per iPhone release does not work for everyone," he adds. Last week, the Apple (AAPL -0.6%) perma-bull/supply-chain tracker predicted a TV with a ring accessory will arrive. Meanwhile, Digitimes reports 5th-gen iPad production will commence in the July-August timeframe; that's in-line with earlier reports. [View news story]
He's got a spotty record with his product predictions but I suspect he is right on this one. What's so hard about introducing a larger screen in a phone, Cook should announce this at the next earnings call along with a nice dividend boost.
Apple (AAPL +0.7%) plans to start "production of a new iPhone similar in size and shape" to the iPhone 5 in calendar Q2, setting up a "possible summer launch," the WSJ reports. The paper adds Apple is working with partners on a cheaper iPhone with a 4" display and "different casing" than the iPhone 5, and that a 2H launch for the device is possible. Both scoops mesh with iPhone rumors (I, II, III) that have been floating around in recent months. Samsung's Galaxy S IV, replete with a 5" display, is expected to go on sale in late April and May (depending on the market). [View news story]
Is this really news, I assume the phone the WSJ is talking about is the 5S, what Apple needs to do is get the larger iPhone 6 out to the market this summer or at least ahead of Xmas instead of next year.
The Z10 Verizon launch has been quiet news wise and I heard that Amazon and Walmart are selling the Z10 for $149.99 and 139.99 respectively with a 2 year contract, I can't remember when a new phone was discounted so soon after launch. Not a good sign imo when there's no buzz when the largest US carrier starts selling it and it's being discounted by two of the biggest retailers.
Deposits over €100K at the Bank of Cyprus will be taxed at 62.5%, sources tell Reuters. The figure is far greater than officials originally indicated. Customers will get 37.5% of their deposits over the €100K threshold in bank shares while the remainder of their cash "may never be paid back."[View news story]
37.5% of the amount over 100K in bank shares and 65% up in smoke as taxes. That's like confiscating 100% of your money over 100K if you have to take worthless bank shares. Sounds preposterous, I'll wait until until its official.

You would have expected a better reception to the news of a significant beat like this but the stock is clinging to the lows of the day.
The stock has gone up sharply in the past with the Lenovo buyout rumors and the 1M handset order and everyone was waiting for the 28th to be that kind of catalyst but I guess not. I think the price action today says you have to be cautious about BBRY.
Estimate cuts from Pac Crest's Andy Hargreaves are helping Apple (AAPL -2%) underperform. Citing weak demand for the 9.7" iPad - he thinks this is likely "a sustained trend" as demand shifts to smaller/cheaper tablets - and a demand pause ahead of a refresh, Hargreaves is cutting his FQ3 (June quarter) iPad forecast to 15M units from 18.5M. He also thinks "the high end of the smartphone market is quickly becoming saturated," and has lowered FQ2 and FQ4 revenue/EPS estimates further below consensus. Hargreaves cut Apple to Sector Perform on Jan. 16, when shares were at $503. [View news story]
This analyst has a concern about the 10" iPad. I got an email from a leading internet retailer offering brand new mini iPads for $40 and $55 off for the 16 and 32MB models respectively.
If the iPad mini is such a hot seller why is it being discounted? Lower prices are coming in the tablet and smart phone market and that's not good for Apple I don't care how cheap the stock looks.
Did You Really Expect People To Queue Up To Buy The Blackberry Z10? [View article]
I was reading an interview with an AT&T rep that they expected 90% of the Z10 phones sold by them would be to enterprise customers and they expected fewer walk-in sales.
If you want a truer picture of consumer sales maybe Best Buy would be a better place to do an informal survey of sales than AT&T.
