  • Apple roundup: Cook on Ahrendts, Mac refresh, iPad survey [View news story]
I don't even know her and I think it's a good hire. A CEO that takes a VP position, that's the kind of voluntary demotion that's going to work in Apples favor. I am sure JCP regrets doing the opposite in placing Johnson at the helm who had no CEO experience.

  • BlackBerry taking out newspaper ads to reassure customers [View news story]
I guess you have to counter the perception you don't have a future but if someone doesn't acquire them this company doesn't have a future.

  • Coal Seasonality Suggests It May Be Time To Cover [View article]
Good article. I would say with ACI breaching the $4 level it probably is on course to rise this quarter making it 10/11 positive quarters in the last 10 years.

It's a trade and nothing more IMO. CNX is rumored to be selling coal assets and emphasizing their NG properties is an indication of how poorly CNX thinks coal will perform over the long term.

  • President still at odds with House Republicans as Senate negotiates [View news story]
I got really long last week, GS, IBM, SLB, QCOM can't believe they couldn't strike a deal after the Republicans extended raising the debt ceiling to end of December from Thanksgiving. The 17th is too close for them not to strike some kind of deal by Monday, my bet is the Republicans go out 6 months on the debt ceiling and reduce their demands before the market opens on Tuesday.

  • Bloomberg: BlackBerry more open to breakup, suitors only want pieces [View news story]
I read that the Canadian gov't just blocked a foreign acquisition of a telecom company, the deal was worth about 500M. They said they would be concerned about a foreign takeover of BBRY because of national security concerns of Canada and the US. You can pretty much rule out any Chinese company taking over BBRY and any others would likely have a hard time taking them over.

A breakup makes little sense if they sell the crown jewels like the network infrastructure and BBM which I assume is what buyers are looking to acquire. Leaving BBRY independent with only the handset business would leave them with a dim future.

  • BlackBerry Smoke Over Waterloo Ontario [View article]
Completely agree. Why would anyone pay a 50% premium for a company that lost $1B and burned through a $1/2B in cash last quarter. BBRY better hope either the Fairfax deal goes through or one of these strategic buyers is interested in the whole company, BBRY left on their own runs the risk of bankruptcy in a couple of years.

  • Why BlackBerry Would Be A Good Acquisition For Cisco [View article]
Out of all the strategic buyers mentiioned (SAP, CSCO and Google) CSCO seems to make the most sense. They have been acquistion minded having purchased 140 companies in the past with Scientific Atlanta being their biggest acquisiton at $6.9B.

Their router business is being challenged by the SDN technology and they might look at BBRY as a chance to market an enterprise only secure phone and network to diversify out of their traditional router business.

A CSCO acquistion would be great for BBRY as well, perfectly aligning with BBRY's intentions to exit the consumer space and focus on the enterprise.

  • Barrick Gold Bears Are Wrong: This Undervalued, Gold Exploration Company Has 68% Upside Potential [View article]
The bears haven't been wrong so far for any of the gold companies. ABX is selling now for less than it sold in 2003, look at your portfolio and tell me how many companies in it that you can say are worth less now than they were in 2003.

I guess you can make a case that there may be a bottom in gold prices and ABX but ABX is no more than a trade and not a long term holding.

  • Who Would Buy BlackBerry? Why? [View article]
How about the a bridge loan of $1B secured by the companies cash if Watsa can't find new investor money and/or the company patents used as collateral for the 3.7B for the bank loans for the deal.

If you're a shareholder you get your 9 bucks whether or not Watsa uses BBRY's assets to fund the deal but the board would have to be desperate to vote for a deal like that.

  • Obama: No negotiations while government is shut [View news story]
I agree with those that say why should Obama negotiate, it's the law, Obama won re-election and the Supreme Court declared it constitutional.

If the Republicans want to overturn the law, wait until they get majority control of both the Senate and House and pass a law to dismantle it just like the Democrats were able to do to enact Obamacare.

  • Dow Jones: BlackBerry receives interest from Cerberus, others [View news story]
I doubt Cerebus offers any more that Watsa but they could offer more attractive terms in offering a true cash deal where BBRY assets aren't secured for any loans in Watsa's deal.

I was reading about Cerebus's history of buyouts and they have tackled tougher nuts than BBRY so I could see them taking a shot at BBRY.

  • Arch Coal - The Ideal Choice For Long-Term Investors To Play The Coal Market Rebound [View article]
You're underestimating the long term secular down trend for thermal coal which even the Chinese with their new pollution policy in reducing the level of CO2 emissions are embracing.

Coal and the companies that produce coal are in the penalty box for the long term. I said sell the last rally with thermal coal prices still at their lows and I see ACI is back to 4 bucks again.

A little late jumping on the BBRY bandwagon buddy. At least you haven't lost your shirt like the other cheerleaders around here.

  • BlackBerry cancels FQ2 CC [View news story]
The more details that come out about this deal the more unlikely I think it happens. $3B in bank loans backstopped by BBRY assets, $1B in equity from new investors and if you can't find new blood, get a bridge loan using BBRY cash to backstop the bridge loan. I thought one of the reasons to go private was to give BBRY a cash infusion in going private not bleed them dry.

The BOD and the minority shareholders would have to be desperate and insane to accept a deal like that. Remember Watsa and the rest of the big stake holders don't control more than 50% of the stock so you still have a say in whether this deal goes through.

  • BlackBerry closes near $8, two pension funds only want pieces [View news story]
I wasn't expecting the call to be cancelled but I said to myself that Heins better be on the top of his game for the call because it was going to be brutal.
