Attention Locusts: The Party Is Moving to Merrill and AIG

Help I have a question....We have an IRA and are getting ready to retire...But we keep losing money sooo fast its scary. My question is:Do we watch our numerous stocks and mutual funds for rise or decline and worry or our Company(MER) I never have got the gist us this as I leave it all up to our broker.Any advise and answers???
