  • Duke Energy (DUK) closes its acquisition of Progress Energy (PGN) but surprisingly names Jim Rogers as CEO and Chairman of the combined company. The plan had been for Progress CEO Bill Johnson to lead the new firm, with Rogers as executive chairman, but Johnson has left. Duke shares +192% premarket following a 1-for-3 reverse stock split. What worries me is Johnson bailing out and leaving Rogers running the lemonade stand. Is there something we should know? Still, I'm long on the new Duke.

  • It seems so easy. The combined population of BRIC nations is close to 3B and they all love American fast food, so explosive growth is a certainty. But not so fast, according to the reports from global players such as Yum Brands (YUM +0.3%), Arcos Dorados (ARCO +3.5%), McDonald's (MCD +0.5%), and Wendy's (WEN -0.5%). The global economy has wreaked havoc on the rosy estimates for revenue, while local tastes in Brazil, India, Russia, and China don't always mesh with U.S. fast food staples. [View news story]
McDonald's introduction to new international markets whose tastes seem to differ has never really been a problem for them. They adjust their menu to accommodate local tastes, like beer and sausages in Germany for example.
Obviously they have been successful enough that expansion has never been a problem.
As well, as the nature of cultures changes in our busy new world, once people have fast, consistent and affordable, they get addicted to it. For example, many pundits said that Walmart would never fly in China, as that is not the way that people shop.Price, variety and product consistency made people quickly abandon low-volume daily shopping at local street vendors and head for the superstore.

  • Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposes a sweeping ban in New York City on large-sized sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters, and from street vendors in one of the most ambitious local measures to take on obesity. If passed, the new law would prohibit the sale of sodas, pre-sweetened ice teas, and sugar-laced energy drinks larger than 16 ounces. In somewhat twisted logic, New Yorkers could still buy two 16-ounce drinks - instead of one 32-ouncer. On the mayor's radar: DPS, KO, PEP, MNST, COT[View news story]
Bloomberg is a dictatorial fussbudget who is single-handedly transforming NYC into a flavorless, hopeless purgatory. Instead of focusing on serious problems, like stagnated employment, shrinking wages, depleted social services and the declining economic survivability of the average New Yorker, he chooses to count our calories and install bike racks for people to pedal to jobs that don't exist.
What's next, "Nanny" Mike? Are you going to outlaw my Bacon Cheeseburger?
During the years that he built his fortune, Bloomberg was a chain-smoker who lived on junk food and nicotine. In his corporate offices, there was a huge central "snack station" on every floor loaded with fatty and sugary treats of all kinds, including plenty of canned soda. This was to keep his workers productive, close to their desks and to dissuade them from lunch or dinner breaks.

"Wow! I could have had a V8!".............but then again, Mike will probably choose HIGH SODIUM as his next windmill to tilt at.
