  • The U.S. government will buy up to 10K hybrids to help trim fuel costs for the fleet of government cars. The marching orders come from the GSA which estimates savings of close to 1M gallons of fuel over the lifetime of the vehicles. The agency didn't say which manufacturer it will buy the vehicles from, although presumably General Motors (GM) and Ford (F) will receive some home field advantage. [View news story]

  • Ford (F) lowered CEO Alan Mulally's compensation by 29% to $20.95M in 2012 after the car maker missed its goals for profit, cash flow and market share. Mulally's package was made up of a $2M salary, a $3.95M bonus, and $15M of stocks, options and other compensation. • The automobile industry could be set for a boom, according to ConverEx Chief Market Strategist Nicholas Colas. The analysts thinks a mid-16M sales run in the U.S. is quite possible and the future beyond this year for the Big Three (GM, F, FIATY.PK]]) is even brighter with demand significantly pent-up. The secret weapon: If auto companies fire up aggressive leasing programs another one to two millions in units sold could occur. [View news story]

  • Ford (F -3%) says it will increase motorhome and commercial chassis production by 35% to meet surging demand for recreational vehicles in the U.S. According to the Recreational Vehicles Industry Association, consumer demand for motorhomes bucked the trend of cautious consumer spending to rise 43% Y/Y in Q4. If the trend continues, Winnebago (WGO +2.9%) might put in another stellar quarter after the company smashed estimates in its recent FQ1. [View news story]

  • The intense smog situation in Beijing forces the government in China to curb the usage of state cars and appears to be increasing dialogue on broad policy changes regarding fuel emissions. How bad is it? Areas around Beijing saw only five smog-free days in January with auto emissions blamed for over 25% of the pollution in the air. The issue plays into the strength of foreign manufacturers (GM, F, VLKAY.PK) able to produce modern low-emission vehicles in the region at a steady clip. [View news story]
the point is cars built here have tougher emission standards, that will allow us auto company's like ford to fill the bill if there emission standard become more stringent. sweet .
