  • Why AIG Gets Billions While GM Gets Scorn [View article]
The Big Three doesn't make cars that we want (high MPG, quality, etc) Guess who killed the electric car? GM! I would have gladly brought the EV1, instead got a Prius.

The BIGGEST problem is organized labor. the unions' "job bank" is the most stupid thing ever (laid off workers get 95% pay) they're the ones who make the Big Three uncompetive. We can still manufacture cars in the US, all the foreign makers are successful.

Bankruptcy is the only way for them to start clean (break all the union contracts, get rid of all the pensions) and doing things the right way.

  • Hedging Inflation Risk with ETFs [View article]
My daughter and I appreciate your articles on ETFs - depend on them for income and now to protect against dollar decline and inflation. It seems 4.4% for TIP is based on the July payout. Now its 5.1% (Aug 3 declared) Still, either way is a lot better than Money Market or CD! Do you know why no dividends were paid between Nov 08 and March? can't find any explanation. Is it because of the meltdown or inflation risk went to zero during that time? thanks

  • Groundbreaking WSJ Story on Gold [View article]
Alright Smackdown! I did the same thing too, scooping up Energy and Preferreds during the Nov and Mar crashes. Did buy GLD in Feb, now back to break even point again. Will change to an option play and use the some of the cash to get a few gold and silver coins.

  • Will the White House Bail Out Detroit? [View article]
I agree with Anthony. and Simple Accountant. Bankruptcy is the only way for the Big Three to start clean (break all the union contracts, get rid of the pensions) and doing things right (build the cars we want - quality, high MPG, electric) The USA can manufacture cars, the foreign makers are doing it successfully without the selfish unions.

  • Bailout Backfire and the Ticking Debt Time Bomb [View article]
Excellent chart, a picture worht a thousand words! Seems LEH is omittied, that would be the big drop preceding the AIG event? The market keeps going down whether the government do or doesn't do anything! credit lock up, business failures, loss of jobs, dropping home prices, foreclosures, repeat at credit lock up, etc how to stop this vicious cycle ???

  • An Alternative to the Bailout [View article]
everyone keep forgetting that some of those borrowers should never have gotten a loan in the first place (dont blame the bankers or brokers, THEY decided to buy a house that they truly couldn't afford and/or didn't understand what they were getting into!) They are the ones at fault for this mortgage crisis. Save the payments to help borrowers at risk because of job loss, etc.

  • A Solution to the Mortgage Foreclosure Mess [View article]
I have option ARM too, it helped me buy a house in the best area and the best schools. I received clear and full disclosure (Wells Fargo) and had the means to fully pay off if necessary (loan is 10X assets). It actually adjusted LOWER in July to 4.25% Those borrowers who didn't understand (NO excuse, you signed a contract) or never really had the means are the ones at fault for this crisis! They should be penalized like Responsibility says.

  • High Dividend Stocks and Preferreds Soar [View article]
Right! This REIT ETF is very good income, entered at 8.50, 9.50. added more last night at 6.95 and its sister fund NOX (average B+ rating) They went down more than others, just because their parent is Lehman Brothers. All funds assets are kept in trust, safe from bankruptcy filing. Besides, Neuman Berger is separate & stable firm. Still many ETFs selling at significent discount to NAV now. ETFconnect my favorite screener tool, then DividendInvestor to check history, ex-dates, etc.

  • High Yield Stocks for Those Who Need Income Now [View article]
forgot one more favorite REIT: HPT - its the only one with investment grade. Easiest way to get idea on whether 'return of capital' is involved in payout is look at Tax information or Rule 19A-1 alerts (SEC requires closed-end investments companies to disclose sources of distributions)

  • High Yield Stocks for Those Who Need Income Now [View article]
excellent article and explanation of why high cash flow. REITs specifically use FFO (Funds from Operations) as the key metric. Brought O, FR, NLY for 6-10% income, even got $10K gain yesterday after negative for 2 months. Also got ALD and ACAS at the bottom for 20% yield. Both REIT and BDC must pay out most of their income by law. Yes, when evaluating these and any closed end income funds (favorites NRO, BIF, AGD ...) watch out for return of capital which really means shrinking of assets and therefore future income/growth. Be sure the dividends are sustainable in the long term by income and CGs.
