  • Ford Tops Ranking of Best Global Green Brands [View article]
Ford continues to impress me with their improved stylimg, engineering, and quality. Now they have also move to the top on sustainability . Clearly their management team "gets it" and the work force is on board with them, delivering the quality on the shop floor as well as the board room. Well done! I will be buying a new Fushion Hybrid next week.

  • "Apple (AAPL -2.1%) is leaning toward additional dividends or a share buyback program," Quartz reports. Sources claim an announcement could arrive in spring, possibly at the same time as a product announcement. Between Apple's remarks and David Einhorn's campaign, many of the Street have been expecting a move. [View news story]
Too much focus on short term stock price is a distraction from the core business of giving the customer what they have always dreamed of. Their focus is in the right place, the question is whether or not their CEO can execute as well as he did when he was Job's COO. We'll know in the next 6 months if that is so. If it is, and they announce the launch I think they will, hold on for 700.

  • Microsoft (MSFT) will charge a hefty $899 for the 64GB version of Surface Pro, and $999 for the 128GB version. Touch/type covers are sold separately. There's a good chance Surface Pro will be seen as just one name in a sea of Windows 8 Pro tablets and convertibles, especially since its use of an Intel (INTC) Core i5 CPU has made it a little thicker/heavier than models running on Intel's Clover Trail. Meanwhile, Digitimes is reporting Microsoft has cut its Q4 Surface RT orders in half to 2M  - that's a negative for NVDA. (NPD data[View news story]
That is exactly what people are missing. It's not a tablet, it's not a Mac Air, it is both in one convenient systems. Best work that MS has done in years.

Based on what I've seen on the current Surface RT and Windows 8 integration, I'm convinced the Surface Pro will be a game changer. I for one am holding off on my purchase until it is available.

  • Are Apple Bulls Aware Of The Downside Risk To The iPhone? [View article]
Taxes will keep increasing to the point where Apple has no cash left, so you should subtract it from the balance sheet now.

Also, their revenue and profit will fall off rapidly for all companies when personal taxes jump next year as well.

If you don't have any spare cash, you don't buy anything new.

  • How did Microsoft's (MSFT) $6.3B acquisition of aQuantive turn into a $6.2B write-down? Former execs interviewed by GeekWire blame a focus on search ads at the expense of display ads; interference from other Microsoft units (a common complaint); heavy brain drain; and difficulties integrating aQuantive's various products. It's suggested aQuantive's missteps have led Microsoft to take a more hands-off approach with Skype, another costly, highly-criticized purchase. (also: I, II)  [View news story]
Microsoft mngt took their eye off the ball on this one. They are either "too big to grow" or "too slow to thrive". In either case, this $6b failure cost them a lot more than that in lack of focus on the tablet/mobile boom. They may catch up with W8, but they shouldn't be this far behind in the first place!
