  • AmEx and Costco ending U.S. partnership next year [View news story]
Victor, I think this is entirely possible, it crossed my mind as well. They could take some of that Revenue Amex was generating AND have a costco focused card.

Jdoe, This is exactly what I thought. Costco is a hard negotiator culturally. They tend to favor a hard ball take it or leave it attitude with their vendors. Personally I think this will be a mistake for Costco, I will have that much less motivation to shop there.

  • Wal-Mart's Real Problem: Competitors Can Match Its Buying Power [View article]
The author also compares private label coffee to a brand item. Also, the comparisons are suspect. While Wal-Mart, Costco,Target and Kroger are all retailers, there are significant differences in model. Basing buying leverage on over all revenues is problematic. The typical Wal-Mart shopper ( average household income <$40K) is not likely to pay $100 to shop at Costco ( average household income $100K +). Too much of a stretch here to make the kind of assumptions presented in this article. IMHO

Costco's Margin (as a strong rule) will never exceed 14%. Target, Wal-Mart et all look more like 50%. they supposedly make up the rest with Membership.

"huge discount i.e. around 55% that members can avail of by purchasing from warehouse clubs."
55% ? Really what on earth are you buying at Costco that is half off typical retail? maybe the hot dogs are 55% below typical retail but what else?

I've found it takes a little while to get used to and is really geared to touch ( no kidding). I started with my Nokia lumia Windows phone and now have 8.1 on a touch tablet/laptop combo and it is great there. I find myself evolving to a touch/mouse combination when I use it. the desk top or machines with out touch are a little harder to get used to. I still run 7 on my desk after testing 8.1. Not sure if I see user efficiency if I were ot run a big touch screen on my desk, reaching up to the screen rather than using the mouse just doesn't seem like an efficiency gain.

  • Signs Point To A Costco Negative Surprise [View article]
It's part of Costco's model to turn inventory faster than vendor pay out. For instance, they hold a 1.5 wk supply or less ( lets say in foods) in stock. WK supply may vary slightly up or down depending on the velocity of the sales and the need for display inventory. The payment terms are typically N30 or more. Hardlines are a different story but you get the idea. they sell it before they pay for it in the vast majority of the items.

Costco buildings do more on avg. in Canada than the US. One big reason is the competitive landscape. No Sams clubs or BJs.
Target will have a hard time in Canada, Wal-Mart is ready and is well into an expansion plan to help lock in share.

  • Microsoft A No-Brainer Investment [View article]
I've been using my Windows phone for about a year. I smashed one a few months ago and started using a Samsung Galaxy S III. Could not wait to get back to WP!! just started with Win 8.1 on a ASUS T100 and never put it down.
I have used all three :
    Apple's OS and ecosystem, great
    Window's new Eco system, great
Android is free software and you definitely get what you pay for.
