Getting closer to a decent entry point into EA. They have far too much influence on the gaming industry to simply disappear. There will be another hit out in the future.

Tim, I feel you have to separate the app store games console idea and that of a competitor to XBox and PS as they are more most part two separate groups. App store game box and profitability, yes, I agree. They already have everything ready to go money will be made. XBox/PS consumer console? Whole heartedly disagree with you. It will be hard money to earn. They will have to put up a large sum and sit back hoping it attracts the crowd (devs and players) down the road.

Agree - give consumers a console box upon which they can enjoy their favorite app store fun on their home screen. This is more in line with Apple's current track than, IMO, going toe to toe against MS and Sony.

The MAIN issue with consoles is and always has been technology - they aren't packed enough with the latest and greatest. There are now phones with more ram and processor power than the 360 and PS3. The new consoles aren't exactly earth shattering either. This, to me, is the achilles heel of the console market. All it would take is a company to infuse developers with a much more PC powered console system with swap out up grade-able components. Why hasn't anyone done this yet? $$$ Consoles aren't heavily profitable. MS lost money for the first several years due to the R&D they shoved into developing the XBox.

Simply put, Apple would lose money on a hardcore gamer console for at least the first few years and it would drive investors mad because too few understand the games industry.

I don't feel Apple has any clue how to compete against MS and Sony for the console gaming market. How would they entice developers? Slash their margins and payout more? How would they entice gamers?

"Here is a better built cooler looking brushed aluminum metal housed console which has the same speed and graphics capability of the Xbox and PS but costs 30% more?"

What core coding would they use? I suppose if they tried to mimic and get as close as possible to the coding of either MS or Sony it would greatly help them - As it is now developing a game for both MS and Sony is quite a task of porting. Now devs would have to port to a third?

Sorry I just don't see it. Console gamers are heavily devoted to their systems - it's like our U.S. 2 party political system. A third can try but good luck. I'd sooner place my bet on Valve's Steam Box far far before I'd look to Apple as a console developer. They simply blew serious gaming off for too long.

And you think Apple will pay devs more money for their games than Microsoft or Sony? I find this very difficult to believe seeing Apple's margins on their current line of devices.

No need to defend my off handed comparison Cagdas as it really does make no sense. Was simply an off the wall comment as to our pop culture.

Alex, I'd call an iPhone a discretionary purchase within the cell phone industry as there are quite a many free options one can choose when signing up for mobile service.

Well written article Lorenzo. Too many articles have been written by 'analysts' who seem to have never played a game much less understand the industry.
