TD Ameritrade: Raising Funds for Possible E*Trade Deal [View article]
I took advantage of the recent flare-up in ETFC shares to write the April $2 and $2.50 calls (covered) since that seems to be about the value in the stock after debt considerations. Does jaw-boning the potential benefits of a merger with AMTD help ??? perhaps....
Fallen Giant, by Ron Shelp: The Uneven History of AIG [View article]
My autos and RV are still insured with AIG ( now 20th Century, to distance itself from the sins of the parent). I've been paring down my holdings in the shares everytime the px gets into the $50's. The dilution courtesy of the goverment holdings, and the toxic assets still in their portfolio extend the potential for a return to profitability beyond my life expectancy.
16 Breakout Stocks on Unusually High Volume [View article]
I also noticed the huge volume in CPST yesterday. I've been waiting for the premium on the Jan $2.50 calls to build up enough to make the trip pay. Have owned the stock since Cramer first "discovered" it. Clean is green !!!!!
Ener1 Increases Stake in Electric Vehicle Maker in Smart Diversification Move [View article]
I spent the long weekend researching the Li battery situation, and ended up split between Ener1 and Johnson Controls. I must be the only one in the world who saw the $300 mln Gov't stimulus payment to JCI for Li battery development and production. I had my buy order in at the open and filled it, only to see the stock sell down. To buy a chunk of HEV on the strength of a cash injection into the oft bankrupt Think auto company is a little scary unless you're into spec plays. Maybe the price of gasoline in Europe would push auto buyers into an ugly little piece of poop Think City auto, but I don't see it flying in the US market.
Capstone Turbine Heads Towards Profitability [View article]
I've been in CPST since Cramer first discovered it. I Profitted from covered call options when the stock was in the $4's, and still hold most of my original position...some companies take longer to get from R & D to profitable.
Second U.S. 'Bank-for-Businesses' Faces Bankruptcy [View article]
I don't see that the CARS program was designed to aid the manufacturers as much as to give a boost to dealers and get folks off their wallets. The side benefit of getting gas hogs off the road and replacing them with cleaner, more efficient cars has value. I hold ACAS shares as a spec play with a basis in the $7's...if they are cutting costs and tightening up their act, they should survive. They may be in violation of lender covenants, but those lenders surely don't want to force ACAS into bankruptcy.
Coatue Joins Citadel in Taking Big Stake in E*Trade [View article]
ETFC has been working hard to strengthen its' balance sheet. If hedgefunds are buying rather than shorting this stock, that's a real positive...those guys are supposed to be really sharp. I'm holding the shares in two accounts, and have made some good $$$ writing covered call options agains the positions.
Wind Power Grows by 33% in First Half [View article]
To me, there is something stately about the slowly rotating blades of a windfarm...much like the flight of sea birds and geese. To call them ugly is the selfish reaction of those who live nearby....much akin to the "not in our backyard" response to halfway houses for released convicts and sex offenders. At least, there is a common benefit derived from the "ugly" wind turbines.
I have supported Boone Pickens and his plan since he came out with it. Some say it's self-serving, inasmuch as he stands to gain from increased use of natural gas for vehicle fuel through his network of fueling stations. His planned windfarm is not a gift to the consumer, but he is willing to go in hock bigtime to get it up and running. No one else has come up with anything like the reasonable method for reducing our need for foreign oil that Pickens has. Obviously, Big Oil will do everything possible to blunt the thrust of Pickens Plan.
Solar: Our Smallest Source of Power [View article]
Solar is probably most appropriate for on-site use where building size is large enough to have an adequate system to power the operations. Establishing a grid to carry excess solar generated power from every site is less cost efficient that gridding from a wind farm. We really need to get those turbines humming on natural gas !
